While much is made of the desire to be surprised by cinema, less is said about the secret charms of a well-packaged slice of the familiar. Robert Connolly's potboiler murder mystery - adapted in partnership with Harry Kripps from the novel by Jane Harper - is just that, a tale that unfolds with elegance across two time periods and which is given additional polish by strong performances and an eye for the natural landscapes of Australia.
Eric Bana brings a lonely complexity to the character of Aaron Falk, a big city cop who finds himself returning to the remote farming community where he grew up after his old friend Luke (Martin Dingle Wall) apparently kills his wife Karen (Rosana Lockhart), eldest child and himself in a perplexing murder-suicide, although Luke's mother Barb (Julia Blake) and father Gerry (Bruce Spence) don't buy it. The river has run dry but old wounds as.

Exclusive: The Roku Channel has a job on its hands to manage its recently acquired library of Quibi shows and has hired the shortform service’s former exec Brian Tannenbaum to help on the non-scripted side.
Deadline understands that Tannenbaum, who was a senior content executive and programming lead in the shortform streaming service’s alternative and unscripted team, has joined the technology company to head up alternative content for The Roku Channel.
Sources have told Deadline that Tannenbaum’s priority is to handle the non-scripted portion of the Quibi content, dealing with producers and talent as it plans to roll out these shows on The Roku Channel later this year.
The majority of these non-scripted shows aired on Quibi during its brief window of operation, but there were a handful that didn’t – some that were completed before it shutdown and others that hadn’t finished production. Tannenbaum will...

The Roku Channel, which entered the original programming realm this year with its acquisition of shows from failed streaming startup Quibi, has slated the premiere of action drama Cypher.
The series will have its premiere on March 19 in the U.S. and Canada. Roku emphasized that the show is a licensed program, not, in its view, a true original since it was produced elsewhere and owned by a third party during production.
Still, the Roku run will be the first appearance for the seven-episode show on any domestic platform. It will be free for viewers on the Roku Channel, the ad-supported outlet that Roku recently said has reach to households with 63 million people. The channel’s viewership has doubled over the past year.

Roku is gearing up to stuff a bunch of exclusive and original programming into the Roku Channel — and the company has set the premiere date for its first licensed content on this front for the free, ad-supported streaming service.
“Cypher,” an FBI-set crime drama series, will premiere exclusively on the Roku Channel on March 19 in the U.S. and Canada. "Maybe there's middle ground between being a boot camp sergeant and a beach bum?" MarVista Ent. has released an official trailer for Swimming for Gold, a campy motivational sports romantic comedy from "Love Island" director Hayley MacFarlane. When US women's swim team hopeful Claire Carpenter's dad sends her to Australia to coach an elite boys swim team, Claire finds herself face to face with long-time rival Mikayla Michaels, and the news that the camp will close if the team loses the next meet. To save the camp, Claire must overcome a secret fear, put aside her differences with Mikayla, and rediscover her passion for swimming. Starring Peyton List as Claire, joined by Daniel Needs, Lauren Esposito, Olivia Nardini, Johrel Martschinke, Ray Chong Nee, Martin Dingle Wall, and Candice Hill. This looks as cheesy as any movie can be, with every last romcom trope and cringe-worthy bit of dialogue they could squeeze in.

Tagline: "Run for Your Life." A trailer for the thriller Happy Hunting came out this week. The film takes place in Bedford Flats. Here, vagrants and drifters are rounded up, for a chase in the desert. Happy Hunting was developed by directors Joe Dietsch and Louie Gibson. Somewhat reminiscent of 1991's Surviving the Game, with Ice-t, this latest film is set to release late in September. The film has already shown at a couple of film festivals, including Glasgow's Fright Fest. Now, a preview for the film's theatrical launch is hosted here. The trailer shows Warren (Martin Dingle Wall) alone in Bedford. He is captured and driven out into the desert. Here, he is grouped with a few other people. Meanwhile, a squad of human hunters are getting ready for murder. And with nowhere to hide in the desert, it is unlikely that anyone will survive. Vertical Entertainment is handling the film's launch.

"The rules are simple: you run, we hunt you!" Vertical Ent. has debuted an official trailer for an indie action horror titled Happy Hunting, which is basically a brand new take on "The Most Dangerous Game". The description only explains that an alcoholic drifter becomes the target of a "deranged sporting event" but it's clear from the title and the trailer that it's obviously about a bunch of rednecks hunting people in a desert town. The film stars Martin Dingle Wall, Ken Lally, and Kenny Wormald. There's a few cool shots in this trailer, mainly the silhouette shots. Other than that, I'm not sure if this going to be entertaining or just sickening to watch. This footage makes it seem like the latter. If any of this interests you, then check it out. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Joe Dietsch & Louie Gibson's Happy Hunting, from YouTube: An alcoholic...

Warren is an alcoholic, degenerate, drifter. On his way down to Mexico he finds himself stranded in Bedford Flats a one-horse town deep in the American desert. Unfortunately for him the town’s pastime is rounding up drifters and hunting them as part of an elaborate sporting event. This most dangerous and deadly game and bloody fight for survival that builds to a violent, vile, live-or-die showdown in the desert.
Once again the classic “Most Dangerous Game” story is mined for another take on the hunting humans theme… This time round filmmakers Joe Dietsch and Louie Gibson lace their particular tale with an incredible streak of black humour that provides a distraction from the all-too familiar tale.
