After handing Malcolm his glass, Trip downs all of his drink. Then, after lighting the candle, he grabs his glass, which now has about 1/2 oz of bourbon. Finally, when he raises a toast, there's two fingers of bourbon in his glass, without him having refilled it.
After Trip finishes downs his first drink, he sets his glass on the deck next to a step next to the bench he'd been sitting at. The next shot of the glass has it on the step, about 6" from the edge. Finally, after he lights the candle, he reaches for his glass, which is still on the step, but only 2" from the edge.
When Malcolm and Trip are drinking straight from the bottle of bourbon, the scene starts with the bottle about half full. The two men take a total of 3 swigs, then the fluid is nearly empty in the bottle.
After Trip pours two glasses of bourbon, he sets the bottle on the floor right next to the side bench he was sitting at. After he gets up to give Malcolm his glass, he returns to the bench, but the bourbon bottle is now in the center of the floor.
Trip makes the statement that there's no point in shaving because the hair and fingernails continue to grow after death. His resource is supposed to be an exobiology class.
However, this is common misconception. The hair and nails only appear to grow. Shrinkage of the skin tissue makes it appear that beards grow and nails lengthen. But they definitely do not.
Using mashed potato to seal even a tiny hull breach in space is preposterous. It simply wouldn't work as the consistency of mashed potatoes is almost 80% water.
After Tucker and Reed turn down the thermostat so as to extend the amount of time they will have oxygen, their breath is visible because of the cold, but the special effects are inconsistent. The temperature doesn't fluctuate, so their breath should be visible as long as the temperature is down, yet their breath is only pictured occasionally.
Trip and Reed turn down the heat to conserve energy yet they leave the artificial gravity running. Generating a gravity field without planetary mass would require a very large amount of energy, many times that required for heat.
Trip states that if he remembers his Academy biology course correctly, hair and nails continue to grow long after death. Clearly he doesn't remember correctly, as this old wives tale has long been disproved. Nails and hair appear longer after death because tissues contract, not because growth continues.
Trip states that the Bourbon will keep him warm. Just the opposite is true. Drinking alcohol will accelerate hypothermia by dilating the peripheral blood vessels. This leads to the feeling of warmth, but increases the body's heat loss.
Malcolm and Trip spend much of their time in the damaged shuttle pod arguing and Malcolm even refuses to sleep. Given their declining oxygen levels, they would have best tried to keep calm and sleep - both states result in less oxygen consumption and could have extended their survival time.
