An “absolutely brutal” Daily Double ruling may have cost a Jeopardy! Champion their chance to compete in the Tournament of Champions on Friday’s (May 23) edition of the series. Brendan Liaw, a stay-at-home son from Vancouver, British Columbia, came into the game with a three-day winning streak and a total of $59,398. Competing against him were Jim Carpenter, a retired music professor from Charlotte, Vermont, and Congressional liaison David Crockett from Washington D.C. In the first round, Liaw took the lead, earning $5,200 to Crockett’s $4,000 and Carpenter’s $3,800. It was Carpenter who secured the Daily Double for the round — correctly guessing that “acid test” was the idiom described by the clue, “Its original sense had to do with dissolving metals to determine gold content; now it means an ultimate proof.” By wagering $1,000 on the Dd, Carpenter brought himself close to the others. During the interviews segment of the day, Liaw,...

Did Taylor Swift Have a Secret Handmaid’s Tale Cameo?! Elisabeth Moss Gives Us the Scoop (Exclusive)

When The Handmaid’s Tale‘s penultimate episode dropped Tuesday, Taylor Swift fans rejoiced: The hour’s opening moments were backed by “Look What You Made Me Do (Taylor’s Version),” an inclusion they hoped was a hint that Swift’s re-recorded Reputation album was on its way.
But a few sharp-eyed fans watching the sequence, which featured Elisabeth Moss’ June and her fellow handmaids on the warpath to destroy Gilead, thought Swift had even more influence on the scene. As in: They were fairly certain she was in the scene as an background actor, albeit with her back to the camera.

The expansion of the California film and TV tax credit, which industry stakeholders argue is key to protecting jobs in the state, hit a snag on Friday, as lawmakers deleted references in bill language to raising the program cap to $750 million.
Gov. Gavin Newsom vowed last fall to increase the program from $330 million to $750 million. Two bills, Ab 1138 and Sb 630, have been working their way through the legislative process to enact that increase and other changes to make the program more attractive to producers.
On Friday, the bills passed through the appropriations committees in the Assembly and Senate, but the references to $750 million were removed.

You gotta give the Lost writers a lot of credit. Over the course of six seasons, the storytellers behind the hit ABC drama actually did answer the vast majority of the questions they raised. We know, for example, why Oceanic 815 crashed on a tropical island, why the survivors found polar bears there, why there were Others (and immortal beings) on the seemingly deserted isle, and whether our heroes were actually dead the whole time. Still, some mysteries remain 15 years after the series ended on May 23, 2010 — whether by narrative oversight or producer decree. We can grow flash-forward beards and shout “We have to go back!” as much as we want, but no number of return trips to the Island will yield answers. Here are some of the questions nagging us the most. 1. Who was with “Christian Shephard” in the cabin? In the Season 4 premiere, Hurley (Jorge Garcia) stumbled upon the same...

Do they just walk away penniless, or is there a compensation system in place for those who don’t make it all the way? While very little has been officially said about the salaries of Survivor contestants, there is a bit known about whether players who aren’t the Sole Survivor actually walk away with any money. Scroll down for everything we know! Are Survivor contestants paid? Yes, Survivor contestants do get paid appearance fees for competing on the series, but the amount is heavily dependent upon how long they last in the competition. In 2021, Corinne Kaplan, who appeared on Seasons 17 and 26, opened up about how much contestants earn from the show. “I think people are always surprised to learn that we do earn money,” she said on the...

Since 1979, the Emmy Awards have made space, between the many live-action series it honors, to hand out some recognition to animated programs through its Outstanding Animated Program category. But in the nearly 50-year history of the trophy, a large, increasingly important subset of the medium hasn’t even been eligible to compete: anime.
The rules for the Emmy Awards state that, for a show to be submitted in the Primetime Emmys ceremony, the show needs to be produced at least partially by an American company. As a result, the uniquely Japanese art form — despite its growing popularity in the West — has only been able to compete in the international category for “Best Kids Animation.”
Six series produced in Japan have been nominated in that category since 2012: “Digimon Xros Wars,” “Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter,” “Shimajiro’s Wow!,” “Design Ah!,” “To Your Eternity,” and “Rilakkuma’s Theme Park Adventure”; “Ronja, the Robber’s Daughter...

How do you even begin to follow a triumph like “Succession”?
It’s the kind of problem that only the most rarified group of showrunners have ever faced, and virtually none of them have found a good answer. For every “Better Call Saul,” there are five misfires like “The Romanoffs,” and it sometimes feels like the smartest move is to pull a David Chase or Jerry Seinfeld and simply not try at all. Creating a television show that captures the zeitgeist the way “Succession” did requires endless amounts of talent and resources at every level of the filmmaking process — and you still have to catch lightning in a bottle on top of that.
“Succession” Season 4 erased all doubts about Jesse Armstrong’s writing abilities, but it’s hardly reasonable to expect him to snap his fingers and recreate the magical cast chemistry, iconic music, political timeliness, and endless quotability that...

Paramount+ is going all-in on its critically acclaimed British crime drama “MobLand.”
Revealed to Variety exclusively, the company is launching an ambitious Emmy campaign that surprisingly places both Tom Hardy and Pierce Brosnan in the running for lead drama actor. The decision to push Brosnan as a co-lead — rather than a supporting contender as many had assumed — is one of several surprising moves in the streamer’s Emmy strategy.
Helen Mirren, meanwhile, will compete for supporting drama actress, avoiding a head-to-head clash with her own work in “1923,” Taylor Sheridan’s Western drama, where she is considered a possible contender for lead drama actress.

But in doing so, Charlie often puts herself in harm’s way, confronting the killer and explaining how she figured out they did it in great detail… all by herself, without any weapon or backup to protect her. (This week, she came face-to-face with a murderous baseball...

And Herrmann certainly has done that just with who he is, but the assumption was he’d be the next chief. Chicago Fire Season 13 even saw him taking the steps to do so, including becoming captain and planning to take the chief test, after Dermot Mulroney came in as Dom Pascal to lead the firehouse. That’s the first feeling I have when I come back to the show.
