A vain businessman puts a strain on happy marriage to a rich, beautiful socialite by allowing himself to be seduced by a former girlfriend.

Brandon and Jessie Bourne have a long, apparently happy marriage. Several years earlier Brandon had had an affair with a younger woman, Isabel Lorrison, who has now returned to New York intending to rekindle the relationship. Meanwhile, Jessie is attracted to Mark Dwyer, a former policeman-turned-writer who has just returned from a secret mission in Italy.—Mattias Thuresson

Beautiful Isabel, who had an affair with Brandon before he married Jessie, is back in town. Following Isabel's return to New York, Brandon is involved in a brawl from which he is saved from total social-disgrace by Rosa, a model in a shop patronized by his wife. Jessie goes to thank Rosa and finds her rushing away to the airport to meet Mark, a former East-Side policeman who has become an established writer on the European situation. Jessie also goes to the airport, meets Mark and learns that he is to be a guest-of-honor at a party given by her uptown West-Side friends. Brandon fails to show up to accompany Jessie to the party and she attends by herself, meets Mark again, and they are mutually attracted to each other. But she decides to give wastrel Brandon another chance and she promises to go away with him but is threatened by Isabel. A product of the Upper East Side of New York City being the daughter of famed retired Broadway actress Nora Kernan, Jessie Bourne is radiant in her happiness, something that Nora can see in their standing Thursday-night dinners together. That happiness is due to the love between her and her husband, financial consultant Brandon Bourne, who not only dotes on her but also is Nora's perfect dinner guest on those Thursday evenings. That radiance is in contrast to a year ago in Brandon's infidelity with Isabel Lorrison, with whom he broke up for Jessie and who since has moved from New York. While Brandon still has a wandering eye, especially when he's had a few drinks, something of which Jessie may not be aware, he always has been able to have a hands-off approach, that is, except with Isabel. Problems for Brandon, and potentially by association Jessie, begin with Isabel's return to New York. While she returns with another man on her arm, wealthy Alec Dawning, who fulfills the financial needs side of her desires, Isabel makes it clear to Brandon that she has her sights once again on him, and she is certain of his interest in her despite his protests. While Jessie becomes aware of Isabel's return to New York and, at least peripherally, in Brandon's life, Jessie may have some romantic complications of her own with the entry into her life of Mark Dwyer, whom she met through Rosa Senta, a model at a boutique Jessie frequents and Brandon's savior on one of his nights out without Jessie. Since she was a preteen, Rosa has had a crush on then NYPD officer Mark, who has been serving overseas in the government's foreign service. Upon Mark's return to New York, Rosa may not get the chance to test if her schoolgirl crush is full-fledged love, as Mark immediately sets his eyes on Jessie.—Huggo
