North and South (1985)
One of the worst ever...
I hope God will save us from crap like this in the future. This one is made in the worst possible American tradition where you can only see good people and bad people. Not to say extremely good people and extremely bad people. And in a well known and just incredibly ignorant and foolish typical American way - people are born this way - good and evil. It has not got much to do with the surrounding society. Jesus! You do not know whether to laugh or cry at this monstrous soap opera. Definitely one of the worse ever made. And talking about bad acting. Lesley-Anne Down must have set an invincible record here. And unbelievable parts like the one Terri Garber makes, makes the whole casting even more ridiculous.
Valkyrie (2008)
Piece of garbage
Why making this Hollywood crap? This one was made some years before in German with German actors in German language and far, far superior. Tom Cruise is next to a joke in the main part and should off course be replaced by for example Sean Bean in the first place. And all of us who have seen German movies and others from the time know that the hell Hitler greeting was the common one. In this film we see the American one - too often. OK, this movie was totally unnecessary since it was all done 4 years earlier in a far better way and with actors far more like the originals. So this is just some piece of Hollywood garbage, trying to milk some more dollars out of the plot. Why do not the Americans leave European stuff alone??? They just spoil everything and makes it a multimillion joke??
The Virgin Queen (2005)
Good adaptation
To me this is a pretty good version of the story. Especially Duff makes a very good and at times a very realistic Elizabeth. A bit funny though is that one of the very main characters seems to be missing on the crew list. I cannot find Hans Matheson doing Robert Devereux - Earl of Essex. Tried to make an update but it seemed so complicated that I gave up after 20 minutes... ;-) Well, with or without a complete list this one is a very good complement to the other ones before it. That said since this one seems to focus more on the very personal and private life of the queen and gives us less about politic and social scenarios of the time.
The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby (2001)
Disappointment
Sorry, but this one is plain trash. Full of just very disturbing over acting. Make you think it is some kind of Monty Python farce. But, as a bizarre comedy it is quite good. But what a waste of good actors like Charles Dance, D'Arcy and so on. Well, we all know that Dickens used very black and very white colors quite often - but this is just too much. The 2002 version with Christopher Plummer as Ralph Nickleby is light years ahead this simple joke. As in the Oliver Twist version with the actress Duncan - so incredibly over acting and so incredibly evil it seems as though the script writers think they are far better than Dickens himself.
Sink the Bismarck! (1960)
Kg5
"mikestollov" claims: "Bizmark was good, but against the older, less well specified Kg5 she lost heavily......" That is not really correct. KG5 was built at the same time as Bismarck. And she was commissioned the very same year. And regarding Hood. She was not that "thinly armoured ". In fact, after refits she had the same armour as standard British battleships, except for areas of the main deck. In theory she was a battleship, although built as a battlecruiser. And Bismarck was no doubt a splendid battleship, only bypassed by a few others, built later, like Iowa, Yamato and their sisters. The German claim that Bismarck was scuttled by the crew seems to be correct according to the latest investigations of the wreck.
