The Lunch Date (1989)
Old style, funny expression
The short film, The Lunch Date, is a story about an old woman meets a man in a train and spend strange lunch time. It is white and black film, and it has less dialog and more facial reactions. It is interesting that the characters react a little over with facial expression for example when the old woman surprises, she opens her eye big and stare at something. Because there is very little dialog, it helpful how the character feels or thinks. I think this is one of the features of old films. Moreover, the old woman's small actions can tell how she feels about the environment around her at the station and in the train. One scene when she takes a fork, she looks at it and she wipe the fork. There is not dialog, but obviously we can recognize that she thinks it is dirty. That pert is interesting and effective example of "showing" the feeling of the character.
Born with It (2015)
issues that old Japanese way of thinking
It is about one half-black-boy overcomes the discrimination from his new classmates. Because of his skin color, he feels difficulty of making friends. In this case, kind people around the person would be important as supporters. In this film, the new friend and his mother take important roles. They kindly talk to him and encourage him so that he can be positive. Especially his mother uses strong words and introduces his father's story. These actions might for him to have confidence about himself, not his appearance.
In the middle part, his mother introduces the father, but it is not clear because she just explains how the father was like, not by showing any past scene. Also, at the very last scene, it ends with the boy opens the door and goes to class room. However, it is not showed that how he finally overcomes the problem. Personally, I would like to watch these scenes in detail.
J'attendrai le suivant... (2002)
Importance of facial expression
In this film, two people are the main characters. The story takes place in a train with the man's speech and the woman's reaction. The man looks suspicious at first, and other people laugh at his speech. In contrast, the woman takes it seriously. At this point, her facial expression shows her change of mind. In this film, she does not speak. Instead of that, her face is often focused on expressing how she thinks about the man's words. The angle of each character is interesting. While the man is speaking, the camera shoot not only the man but also other people as it shows that the man is speaking to everyone in the train. On the other hand, the woman is on screen only with her eyes straight at the man to show how serious she listens to him.
Father and Daughter (2000)
Effective way of telling a message on a film
This film effectively shows the relationship between father and his daughter. Because this story is mainly focuses on the daughter's view, it seems unclear what happens to her father. However, it is obvious that daughter loves her father and she miss him for a long time. In the middle of the film, it showing the time passing very fast for her. it might imply that her life is vain without her father because there are mostly the scene of daughter goes the seashore almost every day. From the time progress, the more she ages the more she loses her energy and the sadness is increases. At the last part, the scenery effectively tells the time passes for a long time. The lake is empty and grasses grow in the ocean. Its view also implies the peace and calm state of her. She repeated going and back, but finally she could go forward. She died at very last and she can finally meet her father. This is sad story, but it ends with happiness. This film effectively shows daughter's mind with surrounding environment.
