The Boys (2019)
Kinda like The Incredibles...but for a mature audience
Ever wonder what the world would be like if super heroes actually existed? Well it's not cute, it's not all roses and it's not for kids.
If you're tired of the typical Marvel, Disney and Pixar stuff but still want super heroes, this is the show for you. It's very dark, funny, the characters are flawed and 'real' and in the end you're not sure if the good guys are actually the bad guys or vice versa. It's kinda depressing actually, and that's what makes it so refreshing.
Finally, fantasy content for mature viewers without the cute Disney nonsense getting in the way.
Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
There's a reason why Jim Cameron endorsed this one
I was very underwhelmed by the trailers. I will admit I also got swept up by this new PC culture Hollywood has with feminising everything but boy was I wrong?
I get very nervous when 80% of the cast is so called 'good looking' but this works. The new future soldier's gender takes nothing away from the story. The new villain does a good understated job. Arnie is funny and Sarah Connor is BACK!!!!
The action is edge of your seat stuff, the fight scenes are spectacular and the vfx are really breath taking. Oh and remember that ominous sound they played whenever the T1000 appeared? Well they've updated it with horns and a really grand epic score. Even with your eyes closed, you could tell he's probably on screen, just like in T2. A nice homage.
The only thing I didn't really care for was how adorable and hopeful the Dani character was especially in one future scene but that's Hollywood forcing their happy go narrative.
Don't listen to the reviews. Same people who didn't like this are the same ones who keep giving those awful Fast Furious movies 9/10.
Watch this movie. You're going to be blown away!
Corporate Animals (2019)
Very offbeat and unusually funny
It starts off a bit slow but if you can get through the first 15min, what you'll get is a dark comedy about what happens when a bunch of employees have to pull together to survive being trapped in a cave with their a-hole boss.
It's an offbeat, unusually funny movie filled with a couple one liners that'll make you chuckle. For a quiet night in with nothing else to watch, give this movie a bash.
Don't believe all the poor reviews you see of this film. This will become a cult classic like Office Space in a couple years time
Satanic (2016)
On the upside atleast it's only 85min long
One thing all good 'bad' horror movies have in common is that they all do atleast one thing well: they have good jump scares, an eery atmosphere, a nice lead up to the finale or spectacularly gruesome deaths. No matter how bad, they still have their merits. This movie has approximately zero of those things.
So what's wrong with this movie?
There's no mood. The daytime scenes are sunny and the skies are blue. The locations felt more convenient and affordable than thought out. The colour palette is bright and sometimes warm. They use epic action cinematic scores when pure silence would do. I didn't feel uncomfortable or on edge throughout this movie. I felt irritated waiting for the movie to begin.
All the most memorable horror movies like The Conjuring, the Paranormal series, The Exorcist have an overall eeery vibe about them whether it's disturbingly quiet, dark / grey colour palette etc. Whatever it is, something just always feels off. If you watch any extended scene in those movies, even if it were in a different language, you would immediately get that it was horror.
This movie felt like a student short about relationships between entitled rude college kids.
Low budget doesn't mean low in ideas, quality or art direction.
So what's good about this movie?
It's only 85min long.
Steer clear.
How It Ends (2018)
Should have been named "How Does It End?"
This is not your typical sci-fi blockbuster. There are no massive explosions, aliens, probing, phasers or mind bending visual effects. It's all in the low budget drama and in the hero's immediate task of getting to his pregnant fiance while fending off lawless hicks with future father in law in tow.
It's a very interesting (if not original) film that had everything going for it but the ending. It felt more like a cliff hanger season finale than an actual full length feature.
Yes it's chock full of cliches ie: the *sshole future father in law; doting fiance and lawless post apocalyptic waste land but it's interesting enough to keep you engaged right till the end.
You're with him right up till the end and then...
