Animals on the Loose: A You vs. Wild Movie (2021)
Yep, it's staged and better for it
For the people complaining it's staged, how do you make a choose your adventure type program that isn't planned out? Besides, left to his own devices, Bear Grylls would uneventfully find his way to civilisation in about 15 minutes. Like Top Gear or Mythbusters, you need some light scripting to make the entertainment shine, while still being mildly educational.
Tenki no ko (2019)
Simple, predictable plot that relies on eye-candy
Within the first 20 minutes, you already know what's coming up.
The main character Hodaka doesn't have any good qualities, his only motivation being love; and the depiction of women is degrading. Here as eye-candy and for cheap jokes and sight-gags about their figures.
This could've been somewhat overlooked with a strong message, but the climate change theme is clumsy, and comes across as "Well we're doomed anyway, no point doing anything about it".
Add to that too much padding, a J-POP heavy soundtrack that isn't to my taste and an over-reliance on flashy CG, and it's not one I can recommend.
Heisei tanuki gassen ponpoko (1994)
Charm beaten by its many issues
This movie makes too many missteps to be worth watching. Even though it's close to 2 hours long, it rams narration in far too often for key plot points. The environmental message is particularly clumsy too, unsure about whether it's satire or serious. Would not recommend.
Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Average at best
Find superhero. Superhero doesn't want to get involved. Talk to superhero until they do want to get involved. Repeat. Endgame has its moments, but it's way too bloated for its own good.
Mirai no Mirai (2018)
Deftly balances humour with heavier moments
One of those films that lingers with you well after the credits have rolled. The depiction of family is spot on and helps provide a solid foundation for the premise.
The film doesn't try to push the boundaries of how cerebral a plot can be. It expertly dishes out plot points at a steady rate, leading to a very satisfying ending.
The incredible score, sound effects and opening theme by Tatsuro Yamashita help set the mood. Overall, a fantastic film.
Shingeki no Kyojin (2013)
Has its moments, but often frustrating
I'll start by saying I generally enjoyed it. There's a lot I disliked though, which I'll list a few points.
Firstly, the main character is a psychopath. He shows virtually zero empathy for his friends.
No character development means if you didn't like him at the start, you won't like him at the end of the first season. It makes understanding why Mikasa cares for him confusing, even with exposition shoved in your face. Not saying he has to be a Mr. Nice Guy, but throw us a bone here!
Secondly, the first season is about 10 episodes too long. There's too much filler and pointless side stories. Then the final plot twist is just way too obvious.
I could rant and nitpick for days, but in the end, the show is okay. It's just not quite there.
