Nine Perfect Strangers: Ever After (2021)
Thank you for the uplifting ending
I disagree with a lot of those who commented, I really liked the ending. It felt hopeful, uplifting, positive and it left me with a smile, after quite a few tears throughout this episode. It is about overcoming pain and your past, looking to the future, healing and forgiving others, but most importantly forgiving yourself. What a wonderful gift of positivity this ending gave us. There are so, so many dark shows with no happy endings in sight, it feels almost like a guilty pleasure to be handed this one so unexpectedly. I felt sure it was going to be dramatic and dark, but it ended up being something totally different. I took a while to get into this series, but I am so glad that I persevered as after the first few episodes I was hooked. If you don't like to be left with a positive and optimistic message then don't watch this episode or even this series, there are plenty of dark shows out there for you. Personally I really enjoyed this series and this episode was my favourite!
Senior Year (2022)
A well needed feel good movie!
Is it perfect? No. Did it make me feel happy? Hell yes! Rating on how this movie made me feel and it was all very positive, a joy to watch, a little cringey at times, but the joy and the music counteracted it. I liked Rebel in this, her smile lit up the screen and she played the teenager mentality in an older body well. I also think it had a great positive message. For anyone judging it for being 'too woke', it is demonstrating the differences in the last 20 years and it shows the teen/young adult culture of now in the present day and what it was like in the early noughties. It would be a shock to leave that time one minute and be propelled into the modern world 20 years later, they captured that well. It reminds me in part of the 1999 movie 'never been kissed' and the Jennifer Gardner movie which in some countries was called '13 going in 30'. It was sweet and welcoming, I cried a little, not huge laughs for me, but I smiled often, sang along to music and made me want to dance about a bit. Such a lovely film that has put me in an amazingly good mood. Let's not rate based on how oscar worthy something is all the time, sometimes it's just nice to enjoy movie for what it is and if it makes you feel happy and entertained that is not a bad thing. I rated it 10 because of how I felt watching it and after, I recommend, especially if you want a little 'pick me up'.
The Woman in the House Across the Street from the Girl in the Window (2022)
Well that was so much fun
It is a shame that the obvious satire went straight over a lot of the reviewers heads! This is a comedy, making fun of this genre! Watch it with a smile as it was intended!
Back to the Rafters (2021)
Thank goodness the Rafters are back!
This show is just what we all need right now, family orientated, feel good show! I hope there will be more. The different actress playing Rachel was jarring at first, but you got used to it. To the reviewers who slam Ruby and her views get over it! This is the world we have left for the next generations and of course these sorts of storyline's will appear in more and more shows for good reason- it is the world we live in! The actress who plays Ruby is great, but my favourite kid was little Eddie! So cute I loved his enthusiasm such a joy. More episodes please, we have missed you Rafters!!
Cinderella (2021)
Ignore the haters! If you love musicals this for you!
Ignore the haters! If you do not like musicals and fun, family feel-good movies then do us all a favour and just DO NOT WATCH them! If, like me you love all these things then you will love this joyful Cinderella re-make! Oh and as for the haters slamming this movie as being 'too woke'. Seriously?! It is just re-imagining the fairytale with more up to date messages for kids to aspire to. If you are sick of watching anything that has women in more equal roles who dream of more than just getting married, or if you prefer your movies white washed and completely heteronormative- I think you need to stop watching modern TV and films! Seriously? Get over it. Lovely movie doesn't deserve negative reviews.
The Craft: Legacy (2020)
Actually better than expected
So this movie has really bad reviews. I am not sure why to be honest! I went in expecting the worst, but found it quite enjoyable and a good ending. Yeah it is another teen movie with a supernatural thread, but it works. Yes I liked the original, but this really isn't bad, it is an updated version and not as dark until towards the end, but enjoyable.
Them (2021)
Not for everyone, but has some important messages
This is very intense and horrifying. There are a couple of extremely disturbing moments the main one is part way through episode 5 and you may wish to not look at this as it is really so horrifying as is the ending of episode 9. Some reviewers have accused the series of using horrifying scenes as fetishising racism and look after watching all episodes and making myself sit through even the most horrifying, although I admit I initially fast forwarded the famous horror of season 5, I made myself go back and watch it before the final episode. I don't necessarily agree that it fetishes racism and I believe that as horrifying as some of the scenes were they were actually needed to fully understand the extreme trauma of the central family and the Transgenerational trauma that may have been passed down throughout generations. There is A LOT going on in this series. It is in part a horror story, including paranormal, in part it is a shocking look at racism in the states in the 50's and episode 9 goes back many many years to explain some of the paranormal stuff and the long history of racism in the US. It also address and explores mental health in many forms and there are some small nods to the limited roles that women played. Mostly though it is an unflinching look at the dehumanisation of African Americans. I'll warn it is shocking again, but if you like horror and are drawn to any show calling out discrimination then I would recommend a watch. Overall this was well acted and looked amazing.
Promising Young Woman (2020)
What about the promising young women?!
I have watched this movie 3 times now and I could easily watch it 3 more! I only rented it though so time has ran out. Ok so I had been waiting for this film for a while. I missed it at the cinema, but I kept waiting until it was available to rent. It certainly did not disappoint, in fact it exceeded my expectations on almost every count!
This movie isn't scared of the uncomfortable, in fact it relishes it. However it also delivers some very sweet scenes and has the colour and soundtrack of a rom com. This was done on purpose of course. As was the casting of famously 'nice guy' actors and casting them in roles that may not be so 'nice'. The kicker being that they think they are nice guys, until they are called out. Misogyny and rape culture have become such a big part of our society, shockingly so and calling out these apparent 'nice guys' is very satisfying. The sound track is full of female pop music, with remixes that add something extra. The colourful, pretty clothes and settings seduce you into thinking it will all be OK. What it is getting at is just how normalised rape culture is that it appears even in a rom com type setting, along with leaving us to question some rom com's in themselves over the years and the toxicity that hides beneath the glossy love story.
This movie is a call to arms and calls out everyone involved in covering up this rape culture; men and women. It is not anti men it is anti the society that we live in that makes it OK for someone to rape or sexually assault someone, especially if they are drunk. Also excusing past behaviour as 'we were just kids'. Infuriating and glad that gets called out too! This movie gives me chills, I have a visceral reaction to it. Saying that I also had fun watching it, despite the heavy undertones etc. This is a black comedy in part, which I love. It is written and directed by a woman and this is clear in the characters, dialogue, soundtrack and costumes. One of my favourite quotes in the film that made me laugh was after she was told that she wasn't even that hot she responds with; You're hardly dropping panties yourself Paul. When was the last time you scored in daylight?'
In summary this is my favourite film and with each watch you find something new! Even the title is important as it refers to a rape case and how the rapist was called a 'promising young man.' This film asks what about the promising young women whose lives get destroyed by sexual assault?! Watch it, don't read spoilers as it will ruin it. Just watch and take it in, do not look away, this is an important film.
Above Suspicion (2009)
Lose the creepy 'love interest' angle
I quite liked this show and I am a fan of British murder mysteries. However I am not a fan of the creepy older man in a superior position of power over a subordinate, younger female employee (very inappropriate). It is particularly creepy that he was friends with her father and may have known her as a child. Why on earth would an attractive young woman be attracted to an elderly gentleman in that way?! Yes I understand the father figure aspect, but why make it sexual?! Just another show where they pair younger female actors with much older male actors- just stop. If it wasn't for that I enjoyed this show the 3rd one deadly intent was the most boring, the other 3 were generally entertaining.
Tell Me Your Secrets (2021)
Fantastic thriller!
Wow! What an amazing show! Edge of the seat thriller, with twists and turns that leave you contemplating what makes someone 'good' or 'evil'. Excellent acting, fantastic characters! Honestly I do not know how anyone could give this even a mediocre score let alone a bad one! Amazing!
Moxie (2021)
Rebel Girl!
Awesome music, awesome film based on an awesome book! We need more like this especially to appeal to the younger generation of women! The dream where Vivian has no voice is particularly powerful, as a woman I have often felt that I do not have a voice. I am pretty sure the younger generation feel this even more keenly and no social media has not given women more of a voice, not with all the trolling that happens. This film will not have a high rating, let's face it some will mark it low due to the content. Do not be put off Rebel Girl, we should all have a little or rather a lot of moxie in us.
Ginny & Georgia (2021)
Ignore the haters!
I have to say it still boggles the mind when people watch a show that likely isn't their thing just have give it a bad review. It is refreshing to have shows that tackle serious, valid issues that people face particularly when it involves both teenagers and adults learning about where they fit into the world. This show has a bit of everything, intrigue and humour with some depth and some gloss. It is a thrilling ride and I hadn't expected the dark parts of this show, but I welcomed them. Yes it has a glossy sheen and physically attractive characters, but this is not a story coming from a place of privilege this is a story about survival and growth. If you have an open mind then you will likely enjoy this very much as I did.
Firefly Lane (2021)
I love this so much!
What a wonderful, moving series about the love story of two best friends and soul mates. Sad in places, I love the changes through the years 70's, 80's and early 2000's. Wonderful costumes, lovingly crafted characters, powerful stories about life, loss, love and mostly friendship and the family we choose! I cannot recommend enough and looking forward to series 2 as it finished on a bit of a cliff hanger- I couldn't believe I had finished the series in less than a day and I work!
