No estás sola (2024)
Moving, many layered documentary
This is an extraordinary documentary (on UK Netflix as 'You are Not Alone' ) Like most women I was afraid of the amount of emotional distress and fear I would feel in watching a film about rape. This many layered and empathetic documentary, taking us through the violent event leading to mass protests all over Spain and the world, eventually forced Spanish Law to be changed forever. It could have been emotionally manipulative but Instead it was empowering and gave me courage knowing we are not alone. I am sending it to every young person I know.
Writers/Directors: Robert Bahar & Almudena Carracedo
Editor: Katie Bryer.
Maiden (2018)
Poetry
Who would expect a documentary about the first all woman crew competing in a yacht race to be so moving and poetic? It could have been an earnest piece but no, it was beautiful, emotional and exciting. You couldn't take your eyes off the massive rolling waves and the and how small the women in the great ocean, and how dogged they were to finish their race. Each change in mood was so well placed, often unexpected and surprising and the journey took you all the way from start to finish.
Black Mirror: USS Callister (2017)
Dreadfully disappointing
Cliched plot, bad guy as king of his own digital space ship kingdom defeated by rebellion of good guys he digitally enslaved, gets his comeuppance. Plot could have maybe worked as a half hour Twilight Zone.
Mowing the Lawn (2005)
This extraordinary short film is a perfect gem
This extraordinary short film is a gem, a poem that draws us through universal emotions and then quietly reveals something totally unexpected. My reaction, after watching it was one of delighted wonder - " Of course! How obvious, how did I never see that?" All the elements that make this film perfect are deceptively simple - evocative lighting, camera angles and movement and the intense acting invest the film with a sense of heightened reality that is hypnotic. It was as if a vital secret was being whispered and I found myself concentrating on every word and facial expression played. The director Michael Bentham must be congratulated for transforming the extremely good screenplay by Chris Bryans into an unusually memorable film and making it all look so easy.
