Watchmen (2009)

Amazing adaptation

Loved this. Amazing how so much effort has been put into making many scenes almost identical to the book.

Brilliant use of music.

Here we go again with some ramblings to make up the mandatory 600 words, with a slight spoiler; compared to the book I found the story was a bit clearer from the start in the film. I also liked than Veidts monologue was not as long as it is in the book. They managed to do this by revealing bits here and there throughout. Would have liked for the story within a story to have been included. Apparantly it was filmed but they didn't want the film to be that long. I love that the comic book reader and the newsagent are still shown despite this.

Black Mirror: Hated in the Nation (2016) Season 3, Episode 6

Good but a bit slow. And terrible anticlimax.

I was totally convinced Blue was in on it with the bee hacker. She shows up unexpected and without her the other detectives would not have been able to find his trail. She more than nudged everyone on it. So in the end when she disappeared I thought we would see her hook up with him to live happily ever after in exile. It would have been a better ending in my oppinion. Sometimes diverting expectations backfires.

Also that would have made the point that there is a lot of injustice in life. People do get away with ruening other people's lives all the time. Black mirror isn't exactly escapism. This 'we got the bad guy in the end' it seems out if place.

Troll (2022)

Sad

When I first saw this pop up on netfix I was in two minds. Then I noticed it was Norwegian and I thought 'oh great the Scandinavians are good with original films so this cannot possibly be one of those cliched Hollywood films, right?' Wrong!

Classical human behaviour. Don't know it -> shoot at it. And people wonder why aliens don't want to visit us. I mean, if they have the technology to find and travel to our planet, they would probably investigate a bit first, perhaps watch some of our films about aliens. But I digress.

One star for the visuals, troll design and occasional funny line or gesture. Everything else about this film was just too sad. Sad in every sense of the word. :(

Orange Is the New Black (2013–2019)

I read that piper was supposed to be the 'relatable american girl next door' to draw people into the series. Which is weird because to me she is the only character who doesn't make sence. If this is what Americans call relatable behaviour and feelings, I don't think I would want one as a neighbour. (And no, I am not talking about the gayness, I am talking about the selfishness, fakeness and the short-sightedness, the hurting of others for little moments of self gratification) Piper's and also most of Vause's scenes are tedious and annoying. If these two would have been cut out of the show after season 1, I would have given this a 9. Because the rest of it is good. The other stories are interesting. Also not quite relatable, but they make more sense and are much more understandable and engaging. The show highlights real world problems too and there is some good humour in it at times.

Missing Psychologists' perspectives.

I found this interesting, however what i am most interested in is missing from this documentary. How can someone be so taken in by such ridiculous stories? What is the psychology behind that?

'Loves makes you do stupid things' is the only reason given but there has to be more to it. Most people in the reviews simply dismiss her as 'dumb' but I find that too easy, especially since she has done so well in other areas of life, Sarma doesn't seem unintelligent at all. However, you cannot blame these reviewers either for reaching this conclusion as we are not given an explanation of how this grooming, manipulation and gaslighting was build up and how it affected her psychologically.

Such a shame, this could have been so much more.

Interesting but very repetitive

One involved person says something then the next says the same, in only slightly different words. They even repeat some clips. Could have easily been 20 min episodes.

Vikings (2013–2020)

Starts great but then gets repetitive

Very much enjoyed the first couple of seasons. After that i felt i was just watching more of the same over and over again but with less interesting characters. Gradually I got bored to the point that I stopped watching somewhere near the end of season 4. Some of the characters developed in a way that seemed illogical given how they were build up in the first two seasons.

Adding the occational random shield (e.g. The Jamaican flag) was a fun touch.

Purge of Kingdoms (2019)

Surprisingly not the worst film i have ever seen.

This was pretty bad. I am not a fan of slapstick and do not tend to see the humour in randomly drawing a penis either. However this was surprisingly not the worst film i have ever seen. There were some good jokes too and even some references that could only have come from the ASOIAF books.

Missed oppertunity to use Michael Jackson's thriller during Jon Doe's dance off.

Battlestar Galactica (2003)

Fun but slow

Though luckily not many of those typical boring discussions / lectures about what is morally right and wrong. I hope the series will pick up the pace because i did enjoy the story and set up.

The Serpent (2021)

Enjoyable with some odd aspects.

Some of the acting was a bit weird. The emotions some characters had were so obvious on their faces that it is very hard to believe their opponents did not notice their true intentions. Also quite a poor decision to not cast people who can actually speak the language you want them to speak... luckily i do not speak french so this only affected me occasionally with Kippenberg. While it did take away from the athmosphere and serious tone of this series it was also quite funny.

Appart from the above i did enjoy the series very much. Gripping. Good use of tension. Moves at a good pace. No boring bits.

Black Narcissus (2020)

Pretty but dull

Well made athmospherically, however the story line is lacking in so many aspects and did not live up to my expectations at all.

Why does a review need 150 characters? Why waste everybody's time when you can summarise stuff.

Merlin (2008–2012)

Brilliant lighthearted escapism

Loved this. The first season is a bit cliche and cheesy but it gets better after that. Much better. It is perfect escapism; entertaining, not too serious/ grim and with a healthy dose of humour.

I have a friend who refuses to watch the final episode of any series he likes. I always thought that a bit odd and wonder how he can restrain himself like that. After this series i can see the advantage. I would very much like to be able to un-watch the final eppisode.

Torchwood: Exit Wounds (2008) Season 2, Episode 13

Love Torchwood

But hated this eppisode. Escapism tv shouldn't get this grim. Especially not in the final eppisode. The life i am trying to escape from is hard enough!

One extra star because there were some funny / good bits. Though these get shadowed over by the deaths. Two brilliant characters gone. The annoying one survives.
