Mountainside (2023)
Charming & Quirky, Mountainside will Capture Your Heart
Mountainside is the charming story of a Seattle filmmaker stuck without an end to his first feature film. Drifting and untethered, wondering if he'll ever finish his Indie film, Felix meets Stella who lights a spark in him and guides Felix along his journey of self discovery as he develops feelings for his perfect woman, the outspoken film buff, Stella.
Set against a backdrop of Seattle, the film is a joy to watch, highlighting touristy spots as well as Seattle landmarks, clearly a homage to the city Nichols loves. The filming is gorgeous, the music local and a perfect compliment to one man's story of self discovery.
Mikiech Nichols, who plays Felix, is also the writer and director making Mountainside a semi-autobiographical effort of highly charming proportions. A few times, this audience member had to remind herself what part of the movie was his movie and what was Felix's real life, making the script a clever unraveling of his struggle with being a penniless filmmaker. With plenty of laughs at Felix's expense, Mountainside is a film that will have you leaving the theater completely under Felix's spell and wondering what's next for filmmaker Mikiech Nichols.
IMO, Mountainside is destined to be an Indie Hit in 2024 in the vein of Juno or 500 Days of Summer.
Code 8 (2019)
Great Movie a Go Go!
There were so many things I loved about this movie. I wasn't sure what to expect since it was funded on Indiegogo, not realizing they got way more money through fundraising than I originally thought.
Regardless, the movie is really good! The Amells' performances are top-notch and believable, the action scenes are edge of the seat, the sets are fantastic (yea TO), the script works well with sparse dialogue and a storyline that fits together, the music is even incredible, especially the final song at a tender moment.
A movie like this would usually be 100 million budget but these guys pulled off an excellent futuristic thriller with drones and robots for so much less. Worth a look see if you are curious. It's only .99 on iTunes!
