Altered Carbon (2018)
Unheard of downgrade from amazing season one to pathetic season two.
I can't immediately recall such a downgrade from amazing 9/10 first season to like 3/10 mediocre sci fi flick. I don't know any show that went so hard and so fast from being awesome to being meh. Even Terminator 2->3 didn't do it quite as hard.
Season 1 lead had a sort of tired, pessimistic yet commanding presence. He had charisma. He was deadly, intimidating. Had a very specific charm. You see why he's a legendary last envoy from his little mannerisms and charisma.
Season two lead is just angry all the time. Like the actor tried to imitate being intimidating but couldn't come up with anything other than angry voice and angry stare.
But it's not just lead, the story itself is much more bland and diluted and predictable. It can't be the same director and writer. No way.
I watched 7 episodes of season two god knows why, maybe I was hoping for a small glimmer of season one greatness? It didn't happen for 7 episodes and so I gave up.
Pandemic: How to Prevent an Outbreak (2020)
Very intriguing title, but you end up mostly watching family time and religious stuff.
So It's very interesting, science of the diseases, how pros work in the field, how researchers work...
But they pack so much unrelated stuff there!
Like there's lots and lots of talks about god, religion, lots of happy family time of every main character there, the actual pandemic related info is only like 10% of the series.
I want to watch it, because I want to learn more about pandemic in a video format, but they stuff it with so much filler, that I'm not sure I can continue..
OtherLife (2017)
best sci-fi of last couple of years.
Fight club, the Matrix, Inception, Black mirror series, Westworld series - this movie belongs to that group.
Although I prefer to think about positive side of technology and I largely disagree with main idea behind this movie, I can not deny how Great this movie is.
On top of that lead role traditionally given to male actors in Hollywood was given to Jessica De Gouw.
She was brilliant, I could totally sense vibe of "deadline tomorrow, gotta finish project fast" programmer hell from her play.
There's a sense of genius, but incomplete. Her eyes are magnetic, reminds me of Jared Leto eyes.
Supporting actors were great as well! Emotion play was very believable, I'm no expert but I liked it.
I'm amazed! Being 30+ years old and lots and lots of watched movies I very rarely see movies that can truly tell me something new and interesting. For me I think it's the greatest movie of both 2017 and 2016.
