Skinwalker Ranch (2013)
BORED. TO. DEATH.
The actors in this film have NO charisma or even try to make their characters memorable, relatable or interesting. Oh, and on the shallow side, they are not even remotely decent looking (this is show business, after all!)
All the funding must've gone into effects, because there is no actual story, no twists and no conclusion as to why a black dog, a spacecraft and an old film about alien contaminants is in one movie. There's just a lot of running, flashing lights and catty looks.
Even for a found footage film, it is bad. A bland, boring mess of ideas that never comes together in a cohesive theme.
The Tempter (2018)
YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR
Overall, not a bad movie, if you don't mind indies. Apart from being as scary as a peanut and moving at a snail's pace, saved only by the occasional rocker dude to look at, this is strictly for that hour or so you need to kill while waiting for an appointment or preparing for bed.
All I can say is, if this lead character got his art and music 'talent' from the Devil, I'd say he got done in badly and should give back the so-called gifts bestowed. If this is the level of talent you give up your soul for, I'd suggest you stick to your own. Maybe this is the same devil today's "artists" sold their soul to, because the film's credibility falls greatly with this tiny detail - the level of genius the lead character is supposed to have gotten from his deal.
Perhaps the producers should have invested in actual talented musicians and painters to sell the premise of the story. It just reeks of inauthentic dribble among acting that is not bad at all.
The Laughing Mask (2014)
Terrible and cliché
The cover looks great and the concept seems original. This is a ruse. Whatever they spent their budget on was not sound mixing and the acting is a disaster. I could not stand more than 15 minutes before I started to forward the film, but it maintained its overdone, cliché plot and characters.
The female chief and the sexual tension between the rival investigators "forced to work together" is both sad and tired, having been done to death by typically American cop shows. Of course, they throw in some titty shots to garner some attention where everything else fails horribly.
If you are not stoned or bored out of your skull, you might want to give this one a brisk pass.
It Comes at Night (2017)
The title is a lie. So is the Horror.
As a fan of Joel Edgerton's, I make the effort to to see all his films at least once. He owes me for this one. I'll admit, the acting is excellent, but the movie itself is a waste of time.
At most, this is a psychological thriller/ drama...Horror? Not. Even. Close.
The film is full of loopholes and suggestion that never comes full circle to reveal what they were there for in the first place. This is not a spoiler, just a warning - Nothing comes at night, unless I missed the event completely.
In conclusion, this is not a horror film by any standards, and it goes nowhere. At best, it is a look into the life of a paranoid family for about a week. It amounts to nothing, although the suspense keeps you hoping for a climax worthy of the title.
Sad to report that you will have better ways to spend 90 minutes.
A Date with Ghosts (2015)
Speechless
As I have already wasted 70 minutes on this hideously acted, badly spliced together trash, I can just say this:
I hate trashing indie efforts because usually they are a good alternative to formula, mass-produced crap from Hollywood...but in this case, all it leaves me with is that I feel a hell of a lot better about my own short films now.
My hand-held camera work and respect for proper plots and links now look like A-list productions compared to this. I cannot believe I actually found this "movie" on IMDb!
