Pussy Kills (2017)
Good, campy fun!
Just watched this on Amazon Prime, and I really had fun with it. It was an entertaining throwback to those bad films of the 70s and 80s. People seem to forget how "bad" I Spit on Your Grave was. This follows the same pattern, albeit less violent.
If you're looking for Oscar films, go watch "Shape of Water." If you want to turn off your brain, and just enjoy a gorgeous woman taking revenge on a bunch of bad guys in the new era of #metoo, you have to watch this. Enjoy!
The Discovery (2017)
Started good, then something happened
This movie started out in quite a compelling fashion. It seemed to pose the ultimate question, would people be willing to live if they were sure that there was something after death.
The implications and moral dilemmas that proof of an afterlife seemed to be a subject that was new and unique. I was hooked. Then something happened, the film seemed to run out of steam half way and got completely off its rails.
All of a sudden, it became a sappy love story (as if people can fall in love so easily) and all the scientific ethical dilemmas were thrown out and the story lost all that made it interesting.
Acting is, of course, top notch with this cast. Directing and cinematography were quite good also. What the film lacked thoroughly was a script with a solid story that told an engaging story from beginning to end.
All Girls Weekend (2016)
Fun flick
I didn't have any expectations from this film other than it was supposed to be a way to pass the time. I actually really enjoyed it.
It has a couple of good twists. Acting is good, the story is engaging, and the scenery is very pretty to look at.
I just watched "The Discovery" right before this, and despite its obvious Hollywood stars line up and higher budget, I liked this way more and was actually into the story. In The Discovery, I tuned out after the first half hour.
So for an independent film made with a low budget, this was a much better way to spend my time. I definitely recommend it to others.
The Stanford Prison Experiment (2015)
Difficult subject, but great execution
Whether or not I would recommend this to someone else depends a lot on what they expect from the movies they watch. If you want to be entertained, this movie is far from entertaining. Agonizing and difficult to watch, yes, but entertaining, absolutely not. However, if you watch movies to learn something or to be moved emotionally, this movie definitely does that. Because I like my movies to be entertaining, I deducted a couple of stars.
This film was very well written, acted, and directed. However, you have to be ready to watch it. It's not easy at all. If it's that hard just to watch it, I can't even imagine what it would have been like to go through it.
I do want to point out to people who are outraged at the experiment and how people were treated that this is not very far on how people are treated during boot camp. Having been through basic training in the Army, I can definitely say that they break you down psychologically by dehumanizing you just the same.
So if people have an issue on how people were treated for 2 weeks where they had a contract that guaranteed their safety, imagine how a 18 year old who just joined the armed services feels.
37 (2016)
Good if it wasn't for the exploitation of a tragedy
On its face, I would give this film 7 stars because it has gripping characters and story telling.
If it had just been a film about 3 children growing up in a lower middle class complex in Queens, it would be effective in showing the turmoils of their lives in 1962. The acting is great, the cinematography and directing are effective, and the characters are very engaging.
Where this film failed, and the reason it lost 3 stars in my estimation, is in that it exploits the tragedy of the Kitty Genovese murder for no purpose other than to attract viewers. The attack is barely addressed at all, and there are huge holes in the story once "it" begins. Now, there's nothing wrong with making film based on, or inspired by, true events. However, this film does nothing for the story or what truly happened on that day to merit its use of those events as a way to draw an audience.
There are a lot of lessons to be learned from what happened that night, and if this film addressed those issues, it would be a legitimate tribute to Ms. Genovese and would at least teach the audience about the bystander effect. Instead, this film does not teach anything as most of the characters, except one, are completely unaware that anything was happening (for different reasons). Shame on whomever used this tragedy as a marketing ploy.
