Vengeance (2019)
Definitely feels like a "fan film" and not in a good way
I'll admit it's great to see CJ and Steve in their non-Jason roles, but beyond that, the majority of the acting is just plain awful to the point that it is often distracting. Technically, it's mediocre. Editing and shot framing look extremely amateurish and the kills have very little suspense to them and are clunky in execution. Storywise, there is little new here, aside from the Elias Voorhees angle (which had way more potential but was mostly squandered here).
Getting a low budget film off the ground is no small feat so I give them props for succeeding in that aspect. But, it's a shame the filmmakers couldn't use real actors in the key roles. Also, an experienced director, cinematographer and editor would've made all the difference in elevating this to a semi-professional production, instead of the high school quality we got.
Hush (2016)
Definitely overrated
I only watched this due to the almost-perfect Rotten Tomatoes score and expected something utterly great. I couldn't have been more disappointed. Nothing new was offered in this movie that hasn't been already done a multitude of times before, aside from the main gimmick of the protagonist being deaf. But that's all it is, a gimmick. This element hardly factored into the story at all. Had this been a true POV story with no sound at all, it could've been intriguing. But this might as well have been a hearing-abled person. The writers ultimately couldn't find any interesting ways to incorporate this disability into the storyline. But there were many other problems with the film as well: no real motive for the killer (yes even serial killers have an agenda); clichés like cutting the power just as she is trying to call for help; and most maddening of all, no explanation as to why the killer didn't just break into the house sooner. This movie could've ended 30 minutes earlier! Sure it was shot/edited/scored/art directed just fine, but story-wise, there are far better and more original options out there.
