I really wish they would have made a Fionna & Cake show that was completely disconnected from the existing Adventure Time world. Because they wanted it to be canon, it instead created a lot of limitations instead of just creating something new and exiting.
What I wanted was a completely new adventure which was mostly based on (but not necessarily fully) the fan fiction of Fionna & Cake, which could explore alternative relationships like a romance between Fionna and Marshall Lee for example. I love the romance between PB and Marceline in the original show, but this is an opportunity to explore alternative paths and do something new.
What they did do was a fan service show that was carried by nostalgia and "giving the people what they want", but at a cost. The logic in the show does not feel thought through, characters do not feel like themselves or make logical choices, they revert character development and ultimately nothing really changed from the end of the original show and ending of this show when you think about it: Simon says goodbye to Betty and get a second chance in life and he already had the universe of Fionna & Cake. What changed? The only bigger change I can think of is every universe getting a little bit (or much) worse.
Personally, I thought this show felt a bit off from the original show and thus kind of felt more like a fan fiction to me instead of actually canon, ironically.
