Hasmukh (2020)
Those who're expecting great stand up cedy from the TV show have completely missed the point of the whole show
Let me start this off by saying this: This show isn't supposed to be a few hilarious stand up comedy sets along with a good story line. This isn't Louie (TV show by Louise CK). This show is about a comedian who gets into his 'feel' before getting ready for the stage by murdering a person, and it's supposed to be a satire for comedy 'Reality' TV shows on Indian TV.
The level of funny they've shown the comics to be is exactly what it was supposed to be: lame, a little sexist, very very old school, and very Kapil Sharma.
The politics, jealousy, manipulation, mind games and the blackmailing is a direct point out to the Indian TV and movie industry.
That people would do anything to win a TV show, stoop to any level to become famous, and run over anyone and anything during the process of becoming famous, is the whole point.
It's not a show that is trying to be funny but isn't; its a show that's purposefully not funny, which is a direct statement to shows like The Kapil Sharma Show, Comedy Circus, and lots of others which rejoice commercial success on the expense of 'Pati Patni' jokes and comedy which feels like a whole set of WhatsApp forwards.
Apart from that, the story was very original, but the execution could have been better. If they had expanded a little more on how the guy has been getting away with multiple murders, had put in more time into investigations going wrong because of lazy policework, the story would have made a little more sense.
Overall it was an interesting watch and I'm very much looking forward to the second season. Well done Vir Das. You never dissappoint.
Going Downhill by Neville Shah (2019)
Mature, funny, thought provoking, yet light hearted
I never knew Neville Shah as a comedian. I only knew him as the guy who sometimes sits in on the SnG Big Question podcasts, and more recently, one fourth of the 'The Internet Said So' podcasts on Varun thakur's YouTube channel.
I never really thought he was a very funny guy, nor did I feel inclined to watch his specials. But man oh man, how wrong was I.
This special is something that I have failed to witness in Indian comics. There are hundreds of comics, good and bad, with tens of different performing style, but there's none like Neville Shah. He talks about things that happened in his life that are dark, depressing, and dull. Things that people don't want to talk about, and things that make them uncomfortable to discuss. But Neville does it with finesse, and manages to get a lot of laughs out of it too.
The style of some of the dark jokes was very Louis CK-ish, which is high praise. There are not a lot of comics out there in India who go for a dark theme of comedy, because our people run away from their problems, or subjects that involves getting out of the comfort zone. That is the reason why I really loved this special more than anything else that I've watched in the last year. It was funny, insightful, dark, and thought provoking. Neville touched on topics that were very personal to him, and made sure that nobody ever felt uncomfortable laughing at his misery.
Kudos to Neville, and - 1 to me for ever doubting this man. I give him 9 here because there were a few parts where he could have gone for better one liners, but overall it was really funny, and deserves a 9.
Biswa Kalyan Rath: Biswa Mast Aadmi (2017)
Stand up special written and performed by Biswa Kalyan Rath
Biswa has been able to hold on to the audience throughout this show. Be it his out of the box punch lines or just connecting stuff up throughout the show (also including various science jokes in between), Biswa has done the job perfectly. It's funny, interesting and the bits are not something you would have seen any other comedian do. Nothing common throughout the whole show.
A minor set back for me was his modified voice. He's speaking in kind of a maamu Mumbaiya accent throughout, which I don't think is his real accent, which you'll realize when he ends the show and speaks very normally right at the end. But I guess it's there to help make the jokes funnier, so it's all good.
Kenny Sebastian: Don't Be That Guy (2017)
Stand up special written and performed by Kenny Sebastian
After watching various 'Chai Time with Kenny' videos, I was expecting a little more than the mediocre performance Kenny has delivered in this special. Apart from that one bit about happy guitarists, all of it sucked. Really not funny. Not worth watching the whole thing. Sorry Kenny, but it did suck.
Varun Thakur: Vicky This Side, Varun That Side (2017)
Stand up special written and performed by Varun Thakur
After watching many of Varun Thakur's stand up clips on Youtube, and the SNG's 'The Big Question' episodes, I wasn't expecting this stand up special to be this good. I mean, I considered Varun to be a good comic, the best one in SNG, but his short videos on his Youtube channel don't really capture how good his stage act is. This stand up special has two parts; the first one with Varun as himself, doing conventional comedy, with scripted jokes and stories, which are really funny and have an interesting perspective. The other half is him as Vicky Malhotra, Varun's pseudo character or whatever that's called and it is HILARIOUS. Varun, or Vicky has been able to deliver very sexist, tabooed jokes without pissing anyone off (hopefully), like he has done for a long time on his Snapchat, because everybody knows that Vicky is a douche-bag! So, things which most comedians can't say on stage because of all the backlash they get these days, have been said, and they are funny. The jokes, to be honest, are very well done, and the mannerisms of Vicky-his walk, his laugh, his dancing style and the way he speaks-are hilarious! This is a really entertaining special which will keep you glued till the end.
