Road House (2024)
Fun, not incredible
It's a fun tribute to a much better original. Jake plays the role well. The worst thing about the movie is Conor McGregor's god awful acting. This could have been cast with someone much more convincing. Other than that, it's a pretty easy watch. Especially since Daniela Melchior is a total smokeshow. But really, McGregor's acting is so forced and terrible, it's hard to watch. I get the idea of wanting to cast him to get more views, since he's the biggest MMA star in the world, but the movie was so much better before he popped into it. At the end of the day, it's Road House. It is what it is. Worth the watch for a fun and lighthearted movie night.
Andrew Santino: Cheeseburger (2023)
Tired, lazy, unfunny.
I've seen Santino live several times. He's absolutely killed it when I've seen him. This, however... I have no idea what this is. This feels like the pumpkin spice latte of comedy specials. Generic, bland, about as "basic" as comedy can get. At not one point does this special ever pick up and grab you. Probably be more effective as background noise while you're doing housework than anything else. I feel like he has reached that level where he has attained some level of success, and now he thinks he doesn't have to try hard anymore. It's very clear in his writing and execution. Unfortunate when comics go this route.
Sweet Girl (2021)
Jason Momoa is creepy.
Beyond the fact that the movie is just bad and completely unbelievable, for some reason Jason Momoa just comes across as totally creepy when interacting with his daughter. He looks at her and touches her like she's his wife, not like she is his baby girl. Totally rubbed me the wrong way.
The Old Guard (2020)
Cringe acting.
The most forced, cheesy, cringey acting I've ever seen. So many plot holes. So much potential, failed execution.
Chris D'Elia: No Pain (2020)
Nearly unwatchable
I don't get it... His first special is somewhat funny. Maybe it was just the "shock value" of someone being different, kind of like when Dane Cook first came out. But this might be the most lackluster comedy special I've seen in a long while. The same tired baby talk voices and impressions, and zero crafting in the jokes... He relies completely on the goofy "character" that he embodies and shows zero skill in crafting material. Don't even waste your time.
Brendan Schaub: You'd Be Surprised (2019)
What did I just watch.
I wanted to like this... I wanted so badly to like this. But I literally just stared at my TV screen for an hour and did not laugh once. Didn't even crack a smile. It was an hour of me sitting there with a perplexed look on my face being confused, wondering if I was watching the right thing. It is the most god-awful attempt at stand-up comedy I have ever seen in my life. A Tuesday night open mic at a coffee shop anywhere would bring more laughs than this. The real icing on the cake was the stealing of at least 3 jokes that I could count (but, in true Schaub form, leaving out the punchlines).
You're funny on your podcast at times, and I'm sure you're a nice guy, but this explains why there is ZERO Brendan Schaub comedy up on YouTube... you are not a standup comedian.
Mile 22 (2018)
Unbelievably annoying and pretentious.
This movie had a lot of promise, but was ruined by the quick scene cuts which were apparently meant to try and propel the idea of the movie having an energetic pace, and by Mark Wahlberg's obnoxious, arrogant, pseudo-intellectual rants. Seriously, if he had just kept his mouth shut for 75% of the movie, and the director hadn't been so dead set on darting back and forth every 2 seconds between different "suspenseful" scenes, it might have actually been a decent, albeit predictable action movie.
Holmes & Watson (2018)
Utter disbelief.
I have never rated a movie on IMDB before, but this movie was so god-awfully terrible that I felt compelled to. I cannot emphasize how truly bad this movie was. How such a promising cast could deliver such garbage heaps of cringe-worthy attempts at humor is beyond me. If I could give it negative stars, I would.
