The Meltdown with Jonah and Kumail (2014)
Why did they think this was a good idea?
I love comedy. I love Kumail and Jonah. Found some really fun comedians because of this show. Having said that, I don't understand why good comedians, who obviously understand timing, would think it was a good idea to break up people's sets to show us what's going on in the green room. Both parts are funny, but by editing them together just prevents either from really hitting their stride.
True Detective (2014)
Only watched season 1
Truly dark. Well beyond nihilism. I don't like "crime dramas", but the intersection of the characters internal lives and the occult is fascinating and terrifying. Fantastic "payoff."
Didn't watch the other season on recommendations from friends and such terrible reviews.
Mr. Robot (2015)
Goddamn it. The ending, though.
This show is brilliant. I rebuilt a friendship over having to discuss this show. True sci-fi. The tech is cutting edge and accurate. The world/universe building is incredible. And an interesting and uncomfortable social commentary.
I can't really say much else other people haven't said: brilliant acting, well written, uses the entire medium brilliantly, using all kinds of visual and sound cues, so when twists are revealed you suddenly realize the information was there all along.
I binged watched the entire thing before the last season. It doesn't quite reach the enraging level of disappointment that "Lost" reached, but last episode left me with the feeling, "Oh, well, nevermind."
Tales from the Loop (2020)
Amazing Stories, except kind of a bummer
This could never quite hook me. I couldn't tell until nearly the end of the series is it was one story or a loosely related anthology. I'm still not 100% sure. A couple of plot points are completely ridiculous. (You knew that was there and there's no fence? Not even a marker?!?!)
It's obvious this was based on some really evocative "sci-fi" based art. It's beautiful to look at and there ARE some great acting moments, but, overall, it's a lot more sentiment than good writing, and ends up not making much sense.
