The Hustler (1961)
10/10
A true must-see classic
26 December 2014
If one considers themselves a true movie fan then this movie must be near the top of their all time favorites list. I discovered this movie many years ago when I was very young. Even when I watched it then I knew I was watching something special. I didn't have very refined or very knowledgeable thoughts on movies or acting but I could tell the acting in this was superb at a young age. Paul Newman is outstanding as is George C. Scott. However Jackie Gleason is fantastic in an understated role. He's actually not on screen for very long but his screen presence is incredible. The movie is in black and white but the gritty feel of the movie is palpable. I know some consider this movie somewhat slow but I suspect that may come from people who were raised on super hero movies and lots of action and CGI effects. This is regrettable, because it's a shame that the younger generation won't easily find this film nor will they truly appreciate it's nuances. If you've seen the movie well then I don't have to convince you. If you haven't, do yourself a favor and watch this with an open mind.
