Dracula (2020)
A classic case of "Going downhill fast"
I started watching the series without expecting too much since the Vampire genre has been done to death and rarely,if ever, something refreshing comes along. After watching the first episode i was a bit surprised, not by the originality, but from the fact i actually enjoyed it, despite the subtle politically correct feminist references. However by the third episode i was actually insulted by the way this show treated me, the viewer. The suspension of disbelief, needed to stomach what the show throws at you is of titanic proportions and the many directorial mistakes didn't help either.
The Witcher (2019)
Boring and Immature
These were the two words that popped to mind after watching the show. The acting is mediocre, the attention to detail lacking and the character development rushed. At times the protagonist becomes a second rate character ,in his own show, in favour of this or that "strong" female character. More often than not it feels as if the show writers and producers are trying more to make a statement rather than tell a good story. I'm quite sure that most people will enjoy it, perhaps not so the fans, but for those more demanding viewers, with an eye for detail, it just won't do.
Black Mirror: Striking Vipers (2019)
Techno love or love for techno?
Such a poorly conceived and executed episode that tries to cram way too many things into a very short time. Two straight black males share a strong friendship and a love for video games that evolves into gay love which ,at the same time,is a straight interracial white/Asian affair inside the simulated environment of a mortal kombat like virtual world...............huh? What? If the point the episode was trying to make is that love transcends all racial, technological, or gender barriers then it fails at way too many points and it ends up being a mediocre ,unrealistic, boring twilight zone wannabe.
Black Mirror: Rachel, Jack and Ashley Too (2019)
Entertaining?...... Yes , Black Mirror?....... No
While the episode is entertaining enough to pass the time, it's by no means a Black Mirror one. If you watch it expecting the deep, thought provoking themes of the previous seasons , you'll be thoroughly dissapointed. Enjoy it the same way you would fast food......eat it once because it's tasty but don't make a habit out of eating it on a regular basis. or your mind will suffer.
Game of Thrones: The Bells (2019)
The culmination of bad writing
I've been watching game of thrones since it first aired and can safely say that G. Martins absence is showing. The writing has been getting worse and worse to the point the protagonists behave completely out of character and with no substantial justification for such a huge shift in behaviour. As a viewer who puts character development and good writing way above good cgi and action , i'm not pleased at all with what i've been watching for the last 2 seasons or so. Season 8 is superior in regards to visuals but falls short in way of story telling and that to me is the most important thing of all. Also more often than not simple logic is tossed out the window in favour of cheap thrills and convenience. When distances become irrelevant, with characters appearing in places they couldn't possibly travel to, Deus ex machinations saving the day and events happening in very convenient ways , the show ends up telling us a story of impossible occurrences. All in all i'm quite sure that the fans of the show will be compensated ,for their dissapointment, by the books, that i'm sure will be richer, more coherent and interesting.
Captain Marvel (2019)
Juvenile acting in a movie that takes itself too seriously
I watched the movie out of curiosity more than anything else and i didn't like it. The acting is subpar and the bravado of the protagonist combined with her happy go lucky attitude ,in the most grevious of situations, is not only annoying but makes it hard to take her seriously. Eventhough the movie has changed the sex of Captain Marvel from male to female ,i didn't really mind the artistic freedoms adopted by the producers but some viewers might find it annoying as it deviates from the original material. The cgi look cheap at times , the music is so so and the cinematography as well. I found it to be a bit boring and after the first 45 minutes the movie struggled to keep my attention. All in all i wouldn't recommend it.
Upgrade (2018)
Dark irony and humor
Rarely can nowadays the viewers see a movie that respects them by having something to actually say about the moral issues with which mankind has been struggling for millenia. Upgrade has a sci-fi theme that shouldn't deter you from seeing such a thought provoking movie, even if you're not a fan of the genre. The protagonist struggles with the pain of his own mortality and frailty when faced with the dillema of the easy way out that technology provides more and more with each passsing day. To be or not to be human is the message prevalent throughout the one and a half hour of its duration. An especially impressive feat considering the low budget that in no way hinders the leading actor, and anyone involved in the production, from delivering a very satisfying experience. The movie holds the viewer's attention from start to end and i can assure you that for most people it'll be a very pleasant way of spending their time without wondering if they've wasted an hour and a half of your life.
Desearás al hombre de tu hermana (2017)
Cheap, softcore pornography
After reading bad reviews ,i decided to see it and decide for myself if it's bad or not and .............. it's bad alright. Even right from the start, the movie provokes the viewer with sexually suggestive use of children and from there on doesn't get any better. The characters are soulless ,the performances empty, political correctness is rampant and you constantly get the idea that it's nothing more than a cheap softcore porn b-movie. It offers nothing to the viewer in terms of either sensuality or entertainment, so you can safely skip this one ,knowing that you don't miss out on anything important.
American Horror Story: Election Night (2017)
Do demons care?
The thing i always liked about the horror genre is that it can't get any less politically correct. After all demons, werewolves, zombies, vampires, ghouls, evil spirits, mutants and psychopathic murderers will do all sort of nasty things to you regardless of whether you're a republican or a democrat, an immigrant or a native, good or evil and it won't do you any good debating politics with them. So understandably i was a bit disappointed when a long standing TV horror show, like the American Horror Story, decided to go down that road and allow biased politics to creep in becoming in the process psychological drama. My rating is 4/10.
Gyakkyô burai Kaiji (2007)
It has a lot to offer to the viewer
There are many anime , whether about gambling or not, where the protagonist possess almost superhuman intellect, speed or powers. However in only a handful can the hero be.........human with all the weaknesses and flaws of a human being. That's Ito Kaiji, the main character, who is as flawed as anyone and yet so brilliant at times as to almost be out of this world. I really enjoyed the series and once i got used to the ,admittedly, uncommonly angular art style i was really drawn in. I can compare the real life lessons Kaiji has to offer to another great yet underrated anime: NHK ni Youkoso (Welcome to the N.H.K.). All in all , Kaiji is a food for thought type of anime that may demand the viewers undivided attention,to understand it fully, but rewards them with many hours of pure entertainment. My rating is 8/10.
Death Note (2017)
It's bad and you know it
When someone writes a negative review about a movie and that review is the only one he has ever written, you know that it's bad. So where to begin,OK first of all I've seen the anime and never read the manga , but that didn't stop me from appreciating the character development and mind games the series had to offer. When i saw that it was being made into a movie and knowing Hollywood's tendency to butcher source materials beyond recognition, i was quite skeptical. Well as it happens my fears were well justified because this movie is a mess. Light is a teenager with psychological problems due to his mothers death , he's doing other peoples homework for money and he is caring for someone else enough to get beaten down by the school bullies and all this in just the first seven minutes of the movie. If you think that this isn't the calculating, megalomaniac, mastermind antihero with a God complex that's Light, well you're right he isn't and you don't get more politically correct by casting the hero, L ,as black. Anyway i could go on and on about how the movie was immature and failed to capture the intensity and spark of the original but i want to keep this short. I give it a 2/10 and that's only because of Lights frightened schoolgirl screams when he meets Ryuk for the first time. I couldn't stop laughing and for that alone it gets an extra point.
