The Shack (2017)
Classified as "Fantasy"...
This was a movie that neither "preached to the choir" or tried to convert the unsaved. Wow, what a humanistic tale of "God" based on no Biblical word...ever. I think that somewhat classified this tale as a "fantasy/drama" tells it all. The lead (not to mention any other character) has no archs to speak of. The entire movie is flat.
Repatriation (2017)
Not Your Typical Soldier Coming Home to A Pub Crawl Story
Subtle performances and carefully crafted dialogue give this "soldier coming home" drama a twist; all the way to the end. Clever camera work exposes the journey of a one man wrecking crew's reappearance in a small town. Solid acting by Grimley and Mercer tell the story of self loathing and debauchery.
The Last Face (2016)
Don't Waste Your Time
As wonderful an actor(s) as Javier Bardem and Charlize Theron are, I couldn't get past the first 15 minutes. The film starts out excruciatingly slow and doesn't pick up. Sean Penn and Jay Cassidy, both veterans at their craft, had some kind of disconnect. The backdrop of "War Torn Africa" is never used for pacing and therefore the film drags like a turtle walking through mud. The trailer is beautiful, but the film doesn't live up to the trailer's hype.
Flytrap (2015)
Bizarre Indie Will Snare You.
I was bizarrely interested in continuing to watch this crazy sci-fi thriller. Jeremy Crutchley certainly carried the film while Ina-Alice Kopp played his stoic captor nicely. Stephen David Brooks truly showed how to make an indie film; keeping the cast small and locations minimal. He left the rest to the indie look cinematography and SFX. Score was nice too. Enjoyed.
Disposable (2017)
Believable Story Good Cast
It has its indie moments. Overall the film moves quickly. The story wasn't hard to follow. Tommy and Shea were believable and worked well together. Suspenseful story with a twist. Intricate political thriller. The film sticks to its plot. Didn't drift off into a mood or a statement. It did well for the budget.
A Place of Truth (2013)
Take Time to Watch This
Eclectic feel of real indie film and a documentary to boot. Enjoyed the visuals and felt the struggles. Take time to watch this one. A unique, nicely paced documentary about a street poet. Documentaries aren't my thing but this one is really worth checking out! Nothing run of the mill about this.
Jack's Apocalypse (2015)
Solid Indie
While the acting, cinematography and special effects were solid, I think the story could have been stronger. It almost seems like a cop out to end films the way this one ends.
For an indie film, though, you should watch it. There are some solid elements.
Einstein's God Model (2016)
Great Cinematography and VFX.
One thing that bothers me about films budgeted at $2M or less is poor cinematography. This film grabs you from the trailer and continues with great cinematography throughout. I'm sure a lot of money was also spent on VFX and it helped carry this sci-fi thriller to the end.
Kudos. Interesting story also makes EGM a very watchable film. Great work.
