Nope (2022)
Would I watch again? Nope
I expected a creepy horror feel like we had with Us. This movie however only had one scene that really had me spooked and it lasted about 30 seconds. (The kids in the barn scene). Other than that there wasn't much horror and only a handful of suspenseful scenes. I was especially disappointed with the scene with the alien floating above the house. You are expected a knock at the door or some threat but nope, just stay indoors and ur safe. Pretty lame.
The cinematography was cool at times. The scenes looked cool, the wavey figures scattered across the landscape was creative, and the sound editing was pretty cool.
The plot didn't have much payoffs throughout. First the main characters arcs had nothing to do with the alien. Like what does OJ's desire to protect his Dad's legacy have to do with the alien? Can someone help me see it? The Asian kid who was traumatized by the chimp? What did his arc have to do with the alien? I was expecting them to show some twisted desire to be at the mercy of a murderous creature but no payoff on that. All in all I could have been the main character and it wouldn't have made a difference.
I saw a couple reviews that tried to make sense of the movie and find a deeper message. One looked at exploiting animals for amusement and another for our preoccupation to film stuff. Didn't buy either really. Not much depth to the movie. If anyone has any theories I'd love to hear some.
All in all, Nope didn't compare to Get Out or Us really. Wouldn't watch again.
Under the Banner of Heaven (2022)
Entertaining but a little more focused on making a point than telling a story
I chose to watch this series because Andrew Garfield is an amazing actor and I loved him in silence, hacksaw and others.
The great parts of this show we're in the acting. All members of the lafferty family did amazing in their roles. Really showed what can happen when a group can become over entrenched in an ideology mixed with a exaggerated sense of importance and grandiosity. Wyatt Russell did an amazing job and I really like all the work he has been doing. The two main detectives were also great. Officer Taba was a great character and was well acted.
Another great piece to the series included the cinematography. Each shot was artistic and really brought an eerie feel.
One area the show lacked was also a bit of an over exaggeration of the importance of history in motivating behavior of the main characters. This was evident in not just the antagonists but also in Detective pyres behavior. It seemed like the uses of the church's history was trying to link the past behavior is the cause for the current crimes which was weak, in my opinion.
Lastly, I hope this review is helpful. Another reason I chose to watch was because I am a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Ladder Day Saints. This clearly biases a number of my perspectives. That being said I don't doubt there are a number of overzealous and intense members but my immediate experience shows lesser severe believers and more those who observe their religion with attempts to raise happy families and be productive members of society. We don't put 'heavenly father' in our daily conversation or dress like those in little house on the prairie.
The Batman (2022)
Great film! New take on Batman and a welcome one.
The start of the movie was amazing! Batman's introduction monologue and the first look at the riddler were dark and original.
I LOVED the focus on detective work. Easily the most overlooked aspect of Batman. This one killed it on finding clues, cracking riddles, and following the bread crumbs. A couple clues were a bit of a stretch but still very entertaining. I also LOVED Batman being less flashy and gadgety. I liked the lesser focus on Bruce Wayne's persona and more on Batman. I liked that he had simpler gadgets and the bat mobile was just a suped up car. Okay a little extra on the suped up portion.
As the movie progressed a few questions came up that didn't get fully resolved for me. First I didn't get a full understanding of the riddlers motivations. Is he an abandoned orphan getting revenge in the city? A serial killer? A crazy person? It looks like they tried to fit all of the above and it made me a bit confused as to why do what he does. Picking one role instead of all could have given more reason to his madness. Wasn't a fan of his fan club too. Also he had a well crafted way to kill everyone except Bruce Wayne? I mean he's the zodiac until Bruce then becomes the unabomber? Come on. Paul Dano gave a creepy and excellent performance as usual.
Another are that felt unresolved or underdeveloped were Selina Kyle and Alfred. Both characters didn't have enough groundwork for me to really care about them and their ties to Batman.
Last I think it's ridiculous to try and compare Batman's. Just like it's silly comparing spider-man's. Each movie is a new take on the character and should be measured independently of one another. Great movie! Excited to see what comes next.
Air (2009)
Confused
This little 18 mins was a trip. Big fan of andrews work so gave it the watch. Found it on YouTube. Pretty trippy watch. Spoiler he's dead. Only wondering when. Was he hit by the truck? Did he die exploring? Maybe it said on his grave note. Either way trippy and a bit confusing. But what can you ask for in an 18 min short film. #makeatasm3.
Black Widow (2021)
Good not great
I liked it. I was hoping for/expecting a spy movie with lots of secrecy, sneaking, and growth for Natasha. I got a bit of growth and a 'family movie'. I liked her family actually. It wasn't too forced. The intro was awesome with the rendition of smells like teen spirit. She did take a beating like captain America which made her seem super soldiery, that and the falling fighting scene at the climax. Villains weren't great but the story was still entertaining.
The Warriors (1979)
Am I missing something?
My gosh. Acting awful. No character development. No understanding of what these gangs do other than coordinate their outfits. I just don't get all the raving reviews. I mean some cool ideas but overall just a chaotic bunch of nonsense.
Us (2019)
Cool idea. Weird execution.
Magic? How did it all start? When can the 'tethered' think for themselves and not mirror the surface dwellers. Idk just a cool idea gone weird.
Black Panther (2018)
He was way cooler in Civil War.
I expected him to be like he was in civil war. Instead he was just bland.
Suicide Squad (2016)
Trailer made it look good
The Bohemian Rhapsody trailer was awesome. And that cut Leto scene. The one where he's gonna hurt her really really bad. That made it look promising. But The movie was really really bad tho.
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018)
Different but what Spider-Man is all about
Loved it. Great emotional story. Animation was amazing (oscars finally got it right). Music was great. Finally a movie that teaches what Spider-Man was made for. Teaching everyone they can be a hero by taking a leap of faith and doing good. Characters were great. Plot great. Mixing universes always weirds me out but this one was done seamlessly! Fav Spider-Man to date and I'm a spider nerd
Captain Marvel (2019)
First bad MCU movie
This movie has nothing going for it. Brie has no range. Every scene she either has the same quipped attitude or is posing like a bird puffing her feathers. Brie also runs weird. They completely disrespected nick fury and shield making them look like mallcops. No offense to actual mallcops. Also tons of plot holes. Like how did Nick find carol at Pancho's? How did the Skrulls survive for 6 years in a ship? Why does nick all of a sudden not go by nick? When carol starts to beat the 'supreme intelligence' do the Kree not light her up with lasers? And where is the cat in all other avengers movies? Is it just sitting in nicks office? Hated the cat.
The key to what makes fans like me going is looking at the interconnected parts of the MCU and even these parts were disappointing. Nick losing his eye so poorly done. The tesseract brought in just to draw attention. Just a bad one.
The skrulls were the best part and they were the villains I mean the good guys. They were funny and I felt the love. In the scene where Talos sees his daughter and wife I really felt it. But as soon as Brie gets involved feeling dead.
They are why I gave it one star.
Again another sign of politics messing with movies. Carol has no flaws. No weaknesses and nothing to grow from. All she learns is her past which wasn't even compelling. All the scenes with her best friend were weak and dull. I couldn't find the desire to care. Her whole character arc was dead from the beginning. Where's the heart we had when Spider-Man lifts off the concrete? Where's the heart from when Thor loses Loki? Where's the heart when Ironman loses Yensen? Nothing even remotely close.
Don't get me wrong I love the MCU. I've seen Captain Marvel twice and it's been out 2 days. Second time I was hoping to like it. Just poorly done. Lets leave these movies to be done by the Russo Brothers, Feige, Waititi, Gunn (bring him back) and heck maybe even Whedon cuz he did better than this.
Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017)
2 good points rest was trash.
One good point was Luke's arc. I like that he wasn't a stereotypical perfect Jedi. Could have used a better execution since Luke usually isn't a quitter but still interesting.
2nd point I liked when ren turned on snoke. Great turn of events. Really made ren a good villain.
Rest of movie was ok at best. Fins plot was a waste of time.
Love seeing Yoda too.
Imperium (2016)
Great movie.
I don't know why Radcliffe gets so much beef. I though this role was amazing. Movie kept me thoroughly involved and entertained me throughout. Radcliffe was the glue holding the movie together. I don't know the inner workings of the bureau or skinhead groups to check for accuracy but I really enjoyed the movie.
