Pinocchio (2022)
Disney did it again
So, I'm going to give it 3 stars just because I love Tom, even when he is the wrong guy for the role (I believe we have some Italian-American guys who could have done a great job).
Disney should stop remaking films. I understand the lack of creativity is a big issue today, with most of the screenwriters being raised in the age of internet and video games, but man...
I have a motto: "If you won't make it better, you shouldn't make it at all".
Disney had luck with Lion King and since that they desperately try to hit the jackpot again, but it won't happen unless they put some effort on the writing.
The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power (2022)
Emptiness cannot capture the essence of beauty
I have a motto in my life: if you're going to recreate something, do it better than the original. Productions like this are bound to do worse. Producers don't seem to understand one essential thing about why Tolkien's books are so successful. It's not because of the elves, not the landscape, not the battles, not even the characters. There is a greater essence behind Tolkien's works, a hidden beauty and an unspoken philosophy that readers try to capture, live, feel. Peter Jackson came closest to capturing the essence. The theme matters. This series (so far, only two episodes have come out) is empty. Emptiness is the word that best describes this work. Yes, it's gorgeous. Yes, it is well produced. Yes, it has some good performances. Yes, it's expensive. But no, it doesn't honor Tolkien's legacy. If you want to know his work, I recommend reading his books. If you still want to watch something, go for Peter Jackson, without a doubt.
Search Party: Lamentations (2022)
Tried my best
I really tried hard to like this last season, but the ending couldn't be worst, in all senses. Psychotic gay child, zombie infestation, crazy Terminator Chantal, it is all over the place. If you are trying to find some deep meaning amidst all this, you are just another follower of Dori. There is no meaning. The writers just couldn't do it. The didn't know how to write a proper end. They made a brilliant work for two and a half seasons, we must admit that, but they weren't able to finish the job. What a shame.
Search Party: Revelation (2022)
Can't rate 0, unfortunately
What a waste of time these last two seasons. Please, make oneself a favor and jus watch the three first seasons and please stop there. These last two seasons have nothing, absolutely nothing good. I mean, zombies? Come on! The writers were really lost. They just didn't know how to write an end to the story and made such a mess that is impossible to tolerate.
This Is Us: Our Little Island Girl: Part 2 (2022)
It is getting worst
There is a notable change from the first two seasons to these last two. We can see that the writers are not working on the characters anymore, but rather on the message they want to give. This is an important change. When you focus on this story and the characters, they guide you. But this episode is a clear demonstration of an effort to adequate the story and the characters to the message the writers are trying to preach. This is an episode extracted from motivational speeches and social media empowering memes. Beth was never well built, but this episode ruined her. It seems that all Jack's children are going too far from the tree. Jack died as a real human being, not being able to resolve his issues with his mom, his dad and his brother, but yet doing the possible with his life, dying heroically. His children, well, they are millennials trying to resolve all their psychological issues believing this is the only way to true happiness. They need to talk to people in the past, they need to confront, they need to spend all their energy and time trying to change the people see them. They rarely change themselves, rather they want the world to change and accept them.
Also, it is annoying how they are trying to force a reason to Kate leave Toby. He was able to support her through all her countless hard moments, but she is now frustrated because he works too much.
So, well, this was a good journey with two or three good seasons, but it is over now.
The Night House (2020)
If there is nothing there
Scares? Yes.
Good acting? Yes.
Philosophical concept used as the background for a horror story? Yes.
This is a film about what happens after death, and the scariest of hypotheses.
Captain Fantastic (2016)
Fantastic indeed
This is a touching movie about education, love and, of course, family. It shows to us how intoxicated we are with our daily life and how many positive changes can be made. I'm not saying that you can hide your family in the woods, but we need to value the simple life and the deep understanding of our world. That's what this movie is about. You are going to laugh, to cry (a lot in my case) and to think. You will find yourself thinking about it for days after you leave the theater and, if you let, it will change some important things in your life. Viggo Mortensen made his best movie since Eastern Promises and I hope he will be nominated for Oscar. The history is compelling and, as I said, good for thinking and for debates about education and lifestyle.
