The Watcher (2022)
I Wouldn't Bother ....
Pretty sure I cannot muster 600 characters to fill this review. If you read the first dozen or so reviews they pretty much tell the whole story.
A very unlikeable couple buy a fancy century home they cannot afford and end up spiralling into rather well deserved paranoia. The whole of this concept is stretched over seven episodes.
The best description is it is like a current photocopy of a twenty year old thriller which was a photocopy of a 40 year old thriller which was a photocopy of a jokey 60 year old b-movie. But it is presented I think earnestly by someone who actually does believe it is clever.
Scary mostly how poor it is. Good cast, not sure why they participated.
Gentleman Jack (2019)
Excellent production but over fictionalized
I agree with the rave reviews on casting (the lead was superlative) and the production values pretty flawless. Speaking for myself I was disappointed in a somewhat exaggerated dramatization which makes me wonder how much license has been taken. To be fair, it is not presented as documentary, but the use of music and the direct to audience dialogue is a bit manipulative, leading the viewer to a popular conclusion rather than leaving room for questions. This is a pet peeve of mine with most media when they will not leave a comfort zone for personal opinion.
I did not flag in watching all episodes, but I do feel the need now for 'reading the book'. I would like to review the actual research done on the original diaries.
Audrey (2020)
A little TOO mawkish and overly sentimental
Have to agree about the music, and the reenactments. Confusing fillers. There were some good things about it but nor enough to hold my interest. It seemed to me the spotlight was more on the commentators than the subject. Some nice film clips but not enough to fill in the time slot.
The Whole Wide World (1996)
Marvellous Film
All the top ratings earned by this film were totally correct. It was produced, directed and acted beautifully. A true story which is always a plus for me. Well worth seeing. More than once.
The Portrait (1993)
Not as good as I expected.
Agree with other reviews that the story was weak. I did have to watch it in pieces, otherwise the sentiment became overwhelming. Enjoyed, of course, both the principal stars but definitely wouldn't have bothered otherwise. It WAS a made for television movie, and that is how it plays.
