Avatar: The Last Airbender (2024)
Shallow but very pretty
As a fan of the original I decided to give this a fair shot. Watch it with fresh eyes so to speak. So going from there I will start with the bad - the pacing is a bit weird (very fast) and consequently skips over character development moments, especially "in action". They talk a lot about what they're thinking and it doesn't come off natural. Simply - the dialogue could be a lot better. And the casting doesn't help. I like a few actors (disregarding how close they actually come to the original char), specifically Sokka, Ozai (probably the best) and a few "supporting" chars that are not present that often. The rest I can only describe as beginner actors. Especially Katara and uncle Iroh. Aang.. is also not the best but not as bad.
Now the neutral - I'm not mad how they restructured the plot, that's fine as it is an adaptation. Very little humor involved, but it is there sometimes. Mentioning Azula here would be fitting - she's alright. But really Zuko and Azula look like little children to me which seems wrong. One more thing I cannot clear from my biased mind is Mai... She was such a badass skinny goth and they cast her as a slightly chubby yes girl. But I put those things in neutral because it's just my bias to the original. I could list a lot here but it's not productive. The original chars are just not what you can expect here at all.
The good - the visuals. God they crafted a wonderful world. The environment, the CGI, fights - it is just amazing. I am truly amazed at this part and I honestly thought this would be the bad part, but it was actually flipped. I imagined the acting and dialogue would be HEAPS better and the world toned down but nooope. Everything went into the visuals.
Lady Ballers (2023)
I loved it less and more than expected at the same time
So delving into the good, bad and the ugly...
The acting wasn't as great as a normal and overall it doesn't have many funny moments... But that is kind of to be expected since it is a satire comedy and it often adds to the message. The comedic parts - well for me it was mostly not "haha" funny because it reminded me of the societal problems. But again, that was kinda the point, can't blame the movie for adhering to what it is said to be.
So 80% works as satire perfectly, 15% comedy and the other 5% I'd say was the touching ending. It was so sweet, I expected some positive turn-around, but it still surprised me.
I recommend it and most of all I'm glad it exists.
Hart of Dixie (2011)
I love it, but a few things are just...
I love the show. It's easy going, relaxing... Everything I need to relax, a great show if you have anxiety/depression - just cut out all news, drama, thriller, crime tv shows, only comedy and light romance drama, works great for mental issues.
Now what I don't like... In general, I don't like how they constantly use their full names and how it's one of those shows that sooner or later everyone has been with everyone and somehow each time they switch it's "so right, so obvious". No... It never is.
But story wise I hate how Lemon and George don't get married because of an incident 2 weeks prior when G found out, L still having issues with her feelings for Lavon and then they don't get together until the very end. Come on, that's just unrealistic. Same with Z and G. And the most infuriating thing... Wade cheated on Zoe because she "pressured him" (supported and tried to encourage him) and she's later portrayed as the bad guy in this. Not at first but later "Zoe, you really hurt me." ...by leaving because he cheated because he got stressed out, thinking he's not good enough. I mean wth...
The Dragon Prince (2018)
Love it, just a tiny thing...
The good:
I like the art style and I like that I like all characters. It's weird really, even the so called "evil" characters clearly have their motivation which is not bad at its core. Dark magic doesn't seem bad either, just there to even the playing field.
The meh:
- the animation seemed a bit clunky for the first season.
- Comparing this to Avatar it seems empty, like it's missing more story, more backstory, more side stories.
- The PC culture... I don't like lgbt characters if it doesn't add to the story. They're there for no reason other than to please PC culture. And the amount of them is ridiculous. So far we know of 2 hetero couples and 2 (+2 single?) gay, that's disproportionate to say the least and it doesn't add anything. The (not naming names) gay one kinda makes sense to be adoptive parents, I like them, you get a tiny bit of backstory, but the lesbian one adds nothing, the story with them in it is even so short you don't really see anything apart from "here's two lesbians, they were queens".
I know "the meh" seems long, but overall they're small complaints, like a thing that bothers you for a split second if you think about it and then you forget.
Jane the Virgin (2014)
It's great... but...
I love it, I wouldn't really say it's a comedy, it's more like a more lighthearted drama. Which I like. I'm not thrilled about the title, but I guess it's as good as it can be since the start of the show does revolve around this a lot. Nothing wrong with that.
I love the characters, sometimes the "oh I accidentally pressed a button and everything is messed up" situations get a little old, since it happens a lot - I suppose this is "comedy". Anyway, I like pretty much everything else. I love the characters Rogelio and Petra the most.
My only real beef with this show is the last few seasons when this sjw/pc culture started oozing into tv shows, and it's getting worse (on season 4 right now, don't know how prominent it is in no. 5). It's not supper often, like in other shows, but it's definitely an annoying reminder of our time which is just stressful for people who don't want to focus on race, gender and "power", especially in a show. It's like 1 kid misbehaves and they yell at 100 "just to be sure", it just fosters resentment.

Gossip Girl (2007)
I love it.... but
I love the show, it's good drama even if they are sometimes too dramatic about things that happen and it seems everything that can go wrong will go wrong. And everyone being with everybody is also a bit of a stretch and every couple is somehow "epic" and "meant to be" which gets a bit old.
All and all I like it, I don't mind these things too much.
What I absolutely hate in this show is Dan, self righteous, hypocritical and "above it all". I just hate how he acts, what he says, how he says it... just everything. He was ok-ish in the first season, but then he just gets more extreme in his annoying demeanor and personality.
Others are annoying in their own way, but none irk me as much as Dan.
Blair - threatens too much, Chuck - daddy issues (but I like him the most if you disregard the first few episodes), Serena - somehow nothing is ever her fault, Jenny - a mess you sometimes feel sorry for, Nate - it's like he's constantly acting stupid.
If you want a sum-up of the show in a short sentence. Almost everyone dates everybody and a few random people and Jenny moves a lot.
A Rainy Day in New York (2019)
As if people pretend to like it because it feels "artsy"
In my eyes, both characters were unlikable. The guy because he gave off this tortured old school artist vibe, even though he's not an artist he sure talks and broods like one. The girl seemed too naive and I really didn't like her look.
The lines felt forced, there was a little comedy, not a lot of good comedy, a tiny bit of romance but I wouldn't say it's a romantic comedy. It made me exhale faster, nothing really laugh worthy if I watched it the second time. The romance is pretty much not there, I mean just putting a weird couple or almost cheating in a movie doesn't make it romance.
Anyway, it's not a classic movie which makes people think it's artsy so they pretend to like it.
A rainy day in New York is exactly that, a relatively boring day in New York but both people had "interesting" connections that were supposed to make it interesting. I think a day in my life would make a more interesting movie.
This movie was like... imagine a regular movie with a freytag's pyramid, bulldoze and squish it so much you get it like a centimeter off the ground.
Looking at the "does this contain spoilers" field... even if you write the whole story here it still wouldn't spoil anything.
Orange Is the New Black (2013)
Goes downhill
I get it, it's a prison but a series as a whole... I don't know.
It starts out fine, I really liked the first few seasons but then it just gets so f up and dark, the story gets boring and it's just a mess. I started wanting for it to end (I have this weird thing that I have to finish what I start). The final straw was the hint of political bs seeping into it in season 7, it's SO annoying. There was this bs in it before but it just becomes very biased in season 7.
Odd Mom Out (2015)
I liked... parts of it
Good:
- funny moments
- nice-ish story
- most actors are nice looking
Bad:
- Since the title is odd mom out you'd expect it to be more about mothers... not mothers who outsource parenting 99%.
- You can just feel the political bs in real life oozing into this
- It gets sooo annoying, mainly because of all the women
- I find Jill very unattractive, maybe it's the red lipstick with the pitch black hair, I don't know... the more I watch the worse she gets and Brooke gets prettier, no idea why - don't get me wrong, both are annoying af
Most tv shows are bad at the start then get better, this one starts high but then just goes down
Younger (2015)
It's... ok, but not the best story
I'm not bothered by sex scenes and such, it doesn't promote it either. If you want to live like that, great, do it, if you don't, great, then don't. You don't watch a show so it would influence your (subjective) moral compass. You have to accept how other people live and judging fictional characters/a show (or real people for that matter) based on this is ridiculous.
What bothers me is that it's unrealistic in other aspects,
1. unless you forge your documents you can't fake/hide your age from your employer
2. people are ridiculously obsessed with age
3. she thinks she can't know anything from the past because she "hasn't lived in an era when it was popular"
4. people think you can't know anything about a subject (like childbirth, marriage etc.) because you're young and they presume you haven't lived it, well you can know someone who has, read about it and some things are just common sense
5. everyone just seems very immature, at 26 at least half should be in a serious long term relationship/married or even having kids, I don't know why you'd extend your party/teenage years into your late 20, I can't see it as realistic when all 26+/- are still party animals and still horrible at relationships
Then there's just the annoying stuff:
1. Just the general drama and being together and apart, then together and apart... it's really not that hard, and these off and on again relationship can really be mentally damaging - this is what people shouldn't see as ok
2. the "female empowerment" and male stereotypes
3. belittling women who chose to be housewives or even had kids, I mean can't we just respect other's decisions if it has no affect on us? Who cares, you think family is more important - great, you think your career will be, fine, you may figure out in the middle of your life that you want to know how the other side lives and you don't want to become a hypocrite...
Young & Hungry (2014)
I hope for more seasons
Pros:
Very light and easy to watch, really enjoyable, you can relax and take your mind off things and nothing gruesome will happen you'll fear will happen to you - so great for anxiety sufferers. Realistic about some problems, and unrealistic about some other things. And guys? If a woman isn't searching for a man with a good job and/or money, she's lacking some primal instincts to find a good father for her kids. And people usually find each-other that are within the same league appearance/money/education. The show is a bit unrealistic with this, but I guess at least Sophia shows some promise. Sorry, but a cook and a millionaire? Maybe a fling or trophy wife, well their relationship seems shallow so it's kinda spot on...
Cons:
Frustrating story, I mean would you guys decide are you gonna be together or not, the filler relationships are also very boring, because it's clear they're temporary. Also the break ups over tin things. The saying "what comes easy goes" clearly doesn't apply since the coming together is torture. What do they spend so much energy coming together they have none to fix the tiny issues? The Sophia/lawyer romance is my favorite
Laugh tracks - I hate this everywhere, sometimes you can't even hear the pun.
Bit unrealistic at times.
Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising (2016)
I wanted to claw my eyes out
Here's the summary: A bunch of girls decide frats and sororities are sexist, so they rent a house to create their own sorority. The neighbors show up asking them if they can just stay put/quiet for 30 days, that's not too much if you ask me, they refuse, and the "war" starts. They go to the dean, here you see sexism towards men, because apparently that's OK. The sorority girls were the extreme feminist type and if guys can do it, we can do it too (or just act like idiotic hysterical freaks who think a dildo = period blood) mentality is just plain BS. "You would think it was funny if it were dicks" was an actual quote when they bombarded their neighbor's house with their period blood... oh my god... Fake vaginas would be equal to dildos, how the hell did they think a period is OK to throw around?? Then the marijuana stupidity... they rat-out dealers so they can have a monopoly on it. Here you see racism against white people, because that's cool too apparently. Then there's the Hillary Clinton bid, oh joy, bring even more political sh*t into this c*ap-fest... The warmonger will doom us all. Fast forward to the end, the girl's party is "sexist" and the girls wimp out of their plan to raise money for the house, and then they cry about it and then the neighbor lady (forgot her name) says they're just kids and decides to help, even tho in the movie the girl try to even break up their marriage. She helps, then the girls rent their house because, for some reason, all other sororities decided to join theirs (as if they couldn't just change the rules of no partying). Recap: teenagers that act like toddlers, sexism, racism, feminism, politics and no funny stuff (maybe the baby and the vibrator, MAYBE)
