Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael (1990)
One of the best films of the 90's!
This movie is for all the misfits out there that can't seem to find your place in the world. All of your pain, frustration and angst is tied up in Winona Ryder's excellent performance as Dinky Bosetti.
Welcome Home, Roxy Carmichael takes place in Clyde, Ohio, a small, rural town. In the movie, there are your typical 'cliques' and Dinky isn't part of any of them. She chooses to keep her independent, free-spirited self relegated to her 'ark', a broken down boat where she keeps a variety of misfit animals that she bonds with and treats like family. Her adoptive parents don't understand her, her classmates mock her and the only person who seems to 'get' her is the guidance counselor. Elizabeth Zaks. A fellow classmate, Gerald, secretly has feelings for Dinky which he expresses later on in the movie, which leads me to the actor who played him...
Thomas Wilson Brown is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated actors out there. This guy has emotional depth and screen presence that's never-ending. I saw it in this movie, I saw it in "Honey, I shrunk the Kids." and I saw it in "The Mooring". He is one of the best actors out there! (Coincidentally, he strongly resembles a Montana cowboy I met and bonded with on a bus trip out of Arizona back in the mid-90's, but that's another story ;). Anyhow, he is an incredibly handsome guy and a terrific actor. His work speaks to that. I'm not sure if he's done anything recently, but he needs to. He has the talent and the looks to be an A list actor.
Needless to say, this is probably my favorite movie of all time. This is a movie for anyone who has ever felt left out or different.
The only real letdown is that we never really see Roxy Carmichael as she chooses to not show up to her own ceremony at the end of the movie. That's okay though; with all of the other story lines, you really didn't need that. All in all, wonderful movie!
The Chris Gethard Show (2015)
Not even tolerable.
This show is just unbelievably stupid. There's no format, no structure, no notable names and the whole thing is cloaked by obnoxious and unfunny co-hosts, a really bad house band and a set that looks like a messy teenager's bedroom. Chris Gerhard himself is just not funny. He reminds me of the high school class clown that tried way too hard and showed off for attention. IDK..maybe this is a New York style of humor that I just don't understand, but there's nothing entertaining about this. Plus...it's unbearable loud. Lots of people screaming, talking, shouting etc...I watched the first episode ONLY because the Impractical Jokers (who are hilarious, by the way) were on. I watched one more episode after that to confirm my initial impression and that was enough. Not my style. There are much better comedies on than this nonsense.
Blown Away (1992)
Total Erotica...With a Twist
I have to say that this is a different side of Corey Haim. From what I read, he was dating Nicole Eggert at the time of filming so that would explain the on-screen fire when the two of them were doing their thing Lol...let's just say that if you are wanting to spice up things in your relationship, this would be a good place to start Haha ;) The sex scenes are intense.
All in all, I think it's a really good movie. I'm not a huge fan of Corey Feldman, but he played a good bastard in this movie. The plot was good and you didn't really see anything coming until the end. Good acting all the way around. I always enjoy the two Coreys in movies together and this was no exception.
Fuller House (2016)
Unrealistic
I was a huge fan of "Full House" back in the day but this remake is too unrealistic to really be enjoyable. There are several big problems with this show.
The only even slightly believable character here is Kimmy Gibbler. Her style and personality in this reboot are consistent with who she was in the original and that's nice to see. She hasn't really changed; she's still lovable and goofy. She is what's keeping this show from being completely terrible.
If you've ever looked at the styles that the characters of DJ and Stephanie wear, you would see that some of the clothing they wear costs several hundred to a couple of thousand dollars...pretty expensive and unrealistic for a veterinarian with three children and an unemployed ex-DJ.
Stephanie looks and acts like a tramp; she's made several references to men she's slept with. Definitely not a 'family-friendly' show. DJ keeps bouncing between Steve and Matt and supposedly very soon after her husband passed away. Her baby is not even a year old so her husband couldn't have been dead for very long.
The things that happen in the show are very over the top. Stephanie and Kimmy get the New Kids on the Block to come to the house? DJ gets front row tickets to their show and pulled on stage and sung to? DJ goes in and wrestles? Two handsome and successful doctors are fighting over her? And I'm sorry, but no women look as beautiful and put together as DJ and Stephanie do all the time....especially not when you are a working mom with three small children.
Speaking of the children, the two child actors who play her two oldest boys are annoying! The lines are forced, the dialogue is embarrassing and the reactions are just sad. Kids just don't belong in a sitcom unless it's "Everybody Loves Raymond" style...where it actually worked.
There are too many cheesy references to Full House, too much canned applause when one of the originals turns up, too many sexual innuendos and too many unrealistic situations and people in this show for it to ever be enjoyable. It seems to be more of a vehicle for the always-narcissistic Candace Cameron Bure to show herself off...once again.
Will not be tuning in again.
Jack and Jill (2011)
Funny. Sandler delivers his usual brand of comedy.
Personally, I loved this movie. The undertones are that of close family ties and of one person wanting to be recognized and loved as her own person. Yes, there's a lot of silliness to this movie and no, Sandler doesn't look good in drag, but what do you expect? Adam Sandler isn't known for making Oscar-winning movies. His shtick is making silly, funny, loaded-with-innuendos comedies. My only complaint about this movie would be the overdone and paranoid references to anti- semitism. He overdid it when it came to that but otherwise, I thought the movie was great. The character of Jill is funny, vulnerable and yes...kind of creepy but she's supposed to be! I did think Katie Holme's considerable acting talent could have been to more use but I enjoyed watching her in this film. She's a solid actress.
