Emily the Criminal (2022)
Am I missing something?
Emily the Criminal follows 'Emily' - a college graduate - who struggles with student debt and decides to get involved with increasingly riskier crimes in an attempt to solve her financial issues.
This may be the most pointless movie I've watched in years. It's a movie about a woman doing crime anddd...? That's it. It's a woman committing crimes, for money. And what is the take away from it all? What is the moral? The message? Perhaps it is trying to showcase the thought-process of a criminal with the attempt of the audience gaining some sympathy for her, if that was the goal then it failed miserably.
1/10 would not recommend.
What Is a Woman? (2022)
Just watch it.
An incredibly important and insightful documentary for our time and surprisingly funny at times.
Highly recommended to anyone who is interested in the topic and wants to learn more about how gender has become politicized including what different people from various fields and communities have to say from both sides of the discussion. 10/10.
Space Jam: A New Legacy (2021)
Why all the bad reviews?
People are way too critical for what is literally a movie for children, I watched it and yes it's not great, but 1 star? Seriously? If you think this movie is 1 star you are quite honestly bias and just plain ignorant towards all the actual garbage movies out there, the animation I thought was actually really good and I believe if I was a kid I would have enjoyed the movie.
Don't take it too seriously.
6/10.
Raya and the Last Dragon (2021)
A bad narrative for children.
Nice and pretty visuals, a couple funny moments but the movie ultimately falls apart due to the awful message it is trying to put across, basically "forgive and trust everyone especially your enemies and everything will be rainbows amd sunshine in the end" it's an unrealistic and quite frankly dangerous narrative to be teaching children.
The Empty Man (2020)
Actually scary
Finally a horror movie that doesn't rely on jumpscares! I think most horror fans will enjoy this movie but if you're the type of person who likes the adrenaline of loud sounds and things jumping out at you then maybe miss this one out as you'll probably find it boring.
If you're the type of person who likes a creepy story with slow building atmosphere and tension with some genuinely creepy scenes mixed in then I highly recommend giving this movie a watch. 7/10.
Cold Pursuit (2019)
An American remake done well.
I was expecting this to just be a slapped together action-fest hollywood movie, especially considering it stars the Neeson, I was pleasantly surprised that the director was brave enough to keep the original humour and keep it faithful to the original while making it more accessible to American audiences, the low scores and ratings are from people going into this movie expecting something else, this is essentially a comedy film disguised as a thriller, but it's not their fault since it isn't labelled as a comedy here on Imdb which is a shame.
I recommend this to anyone who enjoys themselves some dark comedy.
Venom (2018)
You will only like it if you're a Marvel fan.
If you remove any association with Marvel from this movie and just judge it for what it is at face value, what you're left with is a very mediocre film with no redeeming factors, it's a typical "alien that infects hosts" movie, it tries to be a comedy but fails to deliver even a slight chuckle from me the majority of the time, the CGI on a technical level is just bad, it might look cool sure, but it is technically bad, there are moments in this film when i wasn't sure if I was watching an animated movie or a live action one, the acting is below par, the story is very predictable and shallow, probably the best aspect of this movie is Tom Hardy and even he is not that great in this, which is disappointing as I know Tom is a great actor.
For what it is, I give it a 5, but again, if you're a Marvel fan you might form a different opinion.
Halloween (2018)
Good, albeit overrated.
This is a solid movie, it does what it's meant to as a Slasher, it is definitely an improvement over the Rob Zombie movies.
That being said, it isn't a very scary movie, nor is it a very gruesome movie, unless you're easily scared or don't watch many horror movies. I constantly felt like they were taking things safe while watching this, the slight comedy and light heartedness also helped to soften the mood, mainstream audiences may enjoy this aspect but maybe not horror fans who enjoy a more serious and gritty feel.
I give it a 6.5, it's satisfying to watch and not bad at all.
Mile 22 (2018)
A popcorn movie.
I feel like people are being too harsh on this film, yes it's not perfect and there is a lot of room for improvement but that doesn't mean its a bad film, I overall enjoyed watching it and didn't feel like I was cheated of my time, It's better than the newer mission impossible movies in my opinion.
The story is nothing interesting, it's just there to give a reason for people to fight and shoot each other, the acting is mediocre, nothing that will impress you, there are a lot of empty spaces in the story that the movie doesn't seem to care about filling in, the ending is also cut short with no real satisfying resolution, the cinematography is decent at times but pretty annoying during the fighting scenes with the presence of shaky-cam, though the action scenes themselves aren't horrible and still pretty enjoyable to watch.
Overall though, It's definitely not a great film, it's JUST an action movie at the end of the day, if you got nothing else to watch and you like the action genre, you probably won't lose anything to give this one a view.
6/10.
Death Wish (2018)
It's a decent vigilante flick.
This is by no means a masterpiece or a film that's going to become a classic or anything, but its a fun movie to watch and you'll finish it without feeling like you wasted your time, if you like crime movies that doesn't take itself so seriously then you should consider giving this movie a watch.
I can't think of any flaws, it's just a well made movie about a vigilante and that's it. 7/10
The Sacrament (2013)
Not good.
As a movie on it's own, it is very weak, it isn't scary nor suspenseful, some may enjoy it based on the simple fact that it's based or "influenced" by a true story. Thats it.
Tsumetai nettaigyo (2010)
Dark comedy at it's finest.
I find that this movie would be better suited as an anime, theres no real reason why it should be live action and a lot of the characters are over the top and cartoonish, the movie is very bloody, very sexual and comedic in the most japanese kind of way... I never thought i would be laughing during a rape scene...
This film starts very normal and slowly gets more screwed up as the story progresses, this is a must watch for any dark comedy fan. 8/10
Army of One (2016)
Underrated.
This is a solid underrated comedy film, the people who gave this movie a low rating are mostly offended religious people, so if you're religious (christian or muslim) this may not be the movie for you.
Some good laughs were had watching this, a bit boring in some parts but overall its a fun nicolas cage movie.
Batman Ninja (2018)
A fun anime.
Don't go into this movie expecting a serious movie or anything like that, this film is simply for the lols, so if you're the type of person who can't shut off their brain to watch a movie then don't watch this, you won't like it.
The art and re-imagining of the aesthetics of batman characters is nice to look at and it's just a crazy animation, but don't expect batman to act like a ninja throughout the film like i did, instead the "ninja batman" is just the build up of this movie.
Watch it if you enjoy anime, just don't expect a really great movie with an in-depth story or whatever.
Edit: I would also like to mention that i'm not a DC or batman fanboy, so that may be the reason why i'm giving a positive review.
A Quiet Place (2018)
A decent horror.
This film is slightly overrated, you won't waste your time watching it however... just don't expect the best horror ever, the movie is well structured with many things to like about it, good acting, good effects, good suspense, good cinematography, nice drama, its just a very decent movie, you'll most likely be satisfied.
That being said, in my opinion the movie is not scary and relies on a LOT of jumpscares, which you would expect anyway in a film like this... but there are quite a few unnecessary jump scares which could of been removed and added in more creepy scenes instead, this would improve the movie as a whole.
The concept is new and fresh, but just because a movie is unique does not mean it should automatically get a high rating, but nevertheless I do recommend giving this movie a watch, especially if you like horror themed thriller films.
7/10.
Housebound (2014)
Overrated.
No idea how it got such a high rating, maybe because it appeals to casual mainstream audiences who have very low standards and enjoy a few light hearted jokes here and there, to put it simply, it's not funny and it's not scary, unless of course you're a simpleton.
Wildling (2018)
This is NOT a horror movie.
Somebody needs to change the genre on here because if someone were to go into this film expecting a horror film then they would be greatly disappointed, this is a Drama mixed with Thriller, you will find nothing scary in this film, in fact you may even laugh at the scenes that show the "wildling" due to bad make up or its just a dude in a bear suit, these scenes were not made to be scary or creepy, this film is about a girl and her mental problems, that's it.
There were plenty of times in this film that made no sense what so ever, I won't get into detail but those scenes really cheapened the film. The story line is nothing we haven't seen before and the script is painfully traditional, this is not a unique film and a lot of the time you can expect what is going to happen, which also further cheapens the film.
This is not a horrible film, the acting is OK, the cinematography is OK and the progression in which the story is told is fair enough.
You won't miss out on anything by not watching this movie, 5/10
Baskin (2015)
Wasted potential
The best part of this film is the cinematography when the police first enter the abandoned mansion/labyrinth, very gritty, very creepy, well shot and some very disturbing scenes, its nice to look at, but that being said the cinematography gets an immediate downgrade once they meet the "master" and the remainder of the film is set in a dungeon of sorts, it almost looks like two different directors made this movie, the majority of this film is nothing special... I was either bored waiting for something to happen or having a laugh at some of the "disturbing" scenes in the dungeon.
The film had potential with some genuinely creepy scenes but unfortunately the movie as a whole is very weak, the structuring of the film makes it seem like a very short film and not in a good way, most of the duration of the film is spent during long drawn out scenes of people talking.
As much as I want to like this movie, I have to give it a 5 out of 10
A Girl Walks Home Alone at Night (2014)
Pretentious.
Another example of a poor attempt at art by making the film black and white, the film has no clear direction and is confused in what it wants to be, the western theme and music sticks out like a sore thumb and removes you from the dark/mysterious theme the movie is trying to go for.
Acting is subpar, cinematography is decent, all in all this film is a mess with no real merit, I am not sure why this is labeled as horror besides the fact that the girl is a vampire, the film is trying to be different yet the result comes out ultimately pretentious.
