Hooked (2017)
Like a porno without the sex - just the awful script and low quality acting
What a waste of an attractive lead. The big failure was in making the protagonist so unlikable that you don't root for him. You just want him to go away.
I could write an essay on how terrible this movie was; but what I really came to mention was the insulting reference of Borderline Personality Disorder, where he (the character - though really the script writer) explains that this is the reason he stole an item from a store (!) and is "fcked up." Uh... no.
Un rubio (2019)
Excrutiating
92% of the movie is silent, at which point you want to scream "Good or bad, just SAY. SOMETHING!" or "Good or bad, just DO. SOMETHING!!" And the other 8%, where something is finally happening or being said, you're just thinking, "What. Is. Happening??" as you watch an unrealistic, non-human interaction between emotionless, reactionless, expressionless men, perhaps staring off into different parts of the room for full minutes while stroking one another.
What human in the world has ever acted like Juan in that scene? It wasn't cute, it wasn't real, it wasn't fun, it wasn't "introverted" or "closeted"; it was borderline psychopathic.
Which character(s) were we supposed to like, and which character(s) were we supposed to root for? I couldn't find one.
Los fuertes (2019)
Entirely without point
Re-read the review "A waste of time" for 90% of what I was going to say.
The first trace of a storyline comes in after 1 hour and 5 minutes, when the two men, in a sort of mild fling, discuss that one is moving to Canada. 30 minutes later, he does indeed ship off to Canada. The end.
What did this movie accomplish or say? It would be too generous to even call this a "slice of life" film, as generally those tend to focus on an *interesting* time or set of events in a person's life - not just any random couple of days.
Guy has some borderline-disinterested meetups with a hookup buddy on his way from here to there. Neat. Even the protagonist didn't care enough about these hookups to even for a moment adjust his plans, so what were we the viewers supposed to care about?
Are We Lost Forever (2020)
A monotonous downer
The movie opens with two men slowly - very slowly - discussing their breakup. That continues - slowly, depressingly, pointlessly - for the next hour and 45 minutes. As with another reviewer, I was begging for the end.
Also, this movie contains one of the least likeable protagonists imaginable. If you want someone to root for, Adrian isn't it.
Love, Victor (2020)
Throwaway season, 5 hours viewing for one gay kiss.
As a gay person, I was beyond excited for a show just for us, with a gay lead and gay storyline. But then I sat down and watched 7+ episodes of a happy straight relationship, episodes packed with girl-guy makeout sessions. Uhhh. I was ready to come here and label the show "queerbaiting," considering the trailer they used to sell us on it. It still might qualify, honestly.
We finally get around to some gay content in a unique out-of-high-school setting in episode 8. Then it started to trickle in, culminating in a happy gay kiss with less than 10 minutes left in the final episode of the whole season. (Which, although was a nice moment for the characters, was not even a nice moment for the viewers because you knew exactly what was coming next.)
In the end it felt like nothing but a setup for season 2, which is (hopefully) going to be the show I thought season 1 was going to be... a show with a gay lead and gay storyline.
I get that there's supposed to be an arc, a buildup, etc - but in a movie, that is all wrapped up, start to finish, from closet to happy romantic ending, in under 2 hours. Five full hours to see one romantic gay kiss... in a show that's supposed to have a gay main character - give me my time back please.
Unfortunately we, the LGBTQ+, are desperate for content with representation, so most will appreciate these small crumbs tossed our way and rate highly. But it's not good enough and not was what expected (or promised?).
