Blue Eye Samurai (2023)
Samurai Game of Thrones
Action! Betrayal! Love! Revenge! Blue Eye Samurai is the adventure that I cannot get enough of. Very few characters are good, a few more a evil, but most are morally gray. This show thoroughly reminds me of the best aspects of Game of Thrones. I am a little biased, I am a sucker for a samurai tale be it an anime, a story in the Star Wars Universe, or a video game, plus I love animation. However, my biases aside, this is a well written story, with great action and even greater characters. I know that older audiences can discount animated stories, but if you are someone that enjoyed Game of Thrones (the good parts of it) go in with an open mind and give this show a chance, I for one, an internet stranger, believe you might like it.
Scavengers Reign (2023)
Dark, Twisted, and Emotional
Scavengers Reign is a beautifully animated sci fi nightmare. It lulls you into a false sense of security with bright colors and simple designs, but it quickly plunges you into imaginative horror that you want to look away from. Never have I been more intrigued and frightened at the possibility of living on an alien planet. Episode 1 introduces you to the human characters as well as the flora and fauna of an alien planet, which is its own character. The first episode is a little slow, strange, and jarring, but it establishes the world very well. At the end of the episode the plot kicks off and for the rest of the season we are following our characters fight to survive the alien world they are stuck on, as well as survive their own humanity. This show is an excellent animated adventure that I hope gets the attention it deserves. I cannot recommend strongly enough.
The Last Voyage of the Demeter (2023)
Dracula's Rogue One
Rogue One is based on a small snippet of a larger story, but managed to expand that small snippet into a fun adventure. This movie does the same thing, but with an R rating. It takes a chapter out of Bram Stoker's Dracula, and turns it into a summer, thriller/suspense movie. I enjoyed this movie for what it was, I would recommend it as a good time.
This is a decent, popcorn summer film. If you go in expecting more or less, you will be disappointed. I went in with low expectations as the movie was not doing well critically. Some critics were lamenting it adds nothing new to the dracula mythos, it doesn't subvert expectations, it doesn't reinvent the wheel. C'mon guys, not every movie needs to be an Oscar contender, can't we just have some fun with Dracula? Critics were too harsh on this movie and are slamming it for what it isn't rather than commenting on what it is. It's a solid 7/10 movie.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (2019)
Pure Fantasy Epic
I'm a fan of the original Dark Crystal, but it has plenty of flaws. Netflix has taken that crazy, 80s, puppet movie and updated it, polished it, and given it a heck of a lot more depth. This series has dialed up the story and the lore to 11. The music is powerful, there is emotional story telling, and wonderful lessons if you're looking. This is a fantasy epic in the same vein as Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones, but it is so different from both of them, and not in a bad way. If you enjoy fantasy, if you enjoyed the old Dark Crystal movies, if you enjoy set design and special effects, if you enjoy epics that are larger than life-you will enjoy this movie. I'm just a random guy on the Internet, but I strongly recommend it.
