The Wilds: Day Six (2020)
A good episode that expands on character motivations and relationship tensions
This episode is good for a multitude of reasons. The central plot brings certain characters together and pushes others even farther apart, setting up/emphasizing important relationship tensions for later in the season. The backstory subplot does a great job of explaining who Toni is and why she feels an inherent sense of rage (helped by Erana James' performance).
I think I read a review somewhere that said this episode was written only for LGBTQ+ people to enjoy, but as a straight girl, I loved it.
Saturday Night Live: Phoebe Waller-Bridge/Taylor Swift (2019)
Why is SNL only funny when they have great writers for guests??
Obviously this is subjective, but it really seems like all the stand-out episodes in recent years have all been due to bringing on good writers as guests. Two of the best episodes of last season were John Mulaney and Adam Sandler, two SNL alumni who brought their own ideas to the team and had great results. Even though Phoebe Waller-Bridge has never written for SNL before, she's an incredible writer who also undoubtedly brought her own style to SNL. Most other episodes fall flat in comparison, over-relying on cheap political jokes, many of which don't land at all, and completely under-utilizing their actors. It's clear that the writing staff on the show needs to change... maybe Waller-Bridge can take over after she's done with Bond....
Murder Mystery (2019)
By FAR the best Sandler Netflix movie
I know this is a low bar, but this is SO much better than the other movies Sandler has made for Netflix. Not amazing, but entertaining. (And not nearly as unwatchable and cringe-worthy as movies like "Sandy Wexler")
Game of Thrones: The Bells (2019)
By far the worst episode of GOT to date
It's a shame that D&D care more about shock value, fan service, twincest, and destroying one of the best female characters on the show than actual decent (or competent) storytelling. As always, the soundtrack, cinematography, and acting are amazing in this episode, but it's ruined by the writer's incompetence and general lack of understanding of their own characters. They destroyed two amazing character arcs in the span of one episode and, sadly, I will never look at Jaime or Dany in the same light again. (Also why would you kill of Cersei in the most bland, humanizing way imaginable? Wasn't she supposed to be the big bad the end of this season???)
