The Flash (2023)
Solid. Surprising. Great fun. Emotional
As someone who grew up with Chris Reeve and Michael Keaton, let's say that DC movies have been a real mixed bag and I weirdly felt that The Flash personally owed me a lot.
I shouldn't have worried. This was such an expertly crafted film that handles the whole multiverse idea with more flair and emotion than Marvel have yet to manage.
Ezra Miller carries two roles on his shoulders and delivers in every scene.
Keaton demonstrates that he belongs in the Bat suit and wasn't just here to please fans..his story and actions have consequences in this film. Ben Affleck also showed up and nailed it as he always has, as Batman.
The Flash is funny, has a ton of heart. None of the cameos feel like mere fan service or ham fisted, they're earned and they mean something.
This just proves what DC can do.
The Mandalorian: Chapter 22: Guns for Hire (2023)
Weakest episode of whole run
The writing on season 3 has been patchy at best, but this episode in particular really dropped the ball.
Nothing of any consequence happened.
The
Stunt casting of Jack Black, Christopher Lloyd and Lizzo was laughable, completely takes us out of the universe.
A real waste of reliable talent.
It genuinely feels like the show is out of ideas, just hobbling from one side quest to another... just reminding you how phenomenal the first season was.
I'm struggling to hit the word count on this review as there was so little substance to actually analyse.
Dialogue was execrable. Acting was sub par.
So disappointing.
Licorice Pizza (2021)
Incoherent, jumbled, self-indulgent tripe
I loved PTA. I really did.
And this film feels like he slapped me in the face.
It drunkenly stumbled from one unearned dramatic scene into another with the grace and elan of someone smashing up a Blockbuster video store.
Garbage.
Ashens and the Polybius Heist (2020)
Joyous, fun, nerdy, wonderful
I absolutely loved every second of this film.
Stuart and the team have crafted a perfect heist movie from a modest budget.
The story hangs together beautifully, and each member of the cast brings amazing energy to their roles.
This is how all films should be made. With love, enthusiasm and a commitment to fun.
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
Beautiful television. Perfectly acted.
Absolutely loved this.
I'm working on a theory that each of the characters represents a piece on the board.
Beth-Queen
Borgov-King
Townes and Watts - Knights
Matt and Mike-Rooks
Beltick and Jolene-Bishops
Shaibel- The pawn
The Guest (2014)
You will see EVERYTHING coming
Predictable at every step.
Unearned and unexplained premise.
Creaky script.
Wooden performances.
Very poor.
