For my money, "REDS" is the greatest motion picture ever made.
As historical films go, no other movie even approaches the rich and fully 3 dimensional depictions of the real life characters or the history of the period as well as Warren Beatty's epic masterpiece.
100 years from now, assuming that most of our motion pictures are faithfully preserved, "REDS" will remain the authoritative history told of the period and process of the installation of one of history's great autocratic empires. Because Director Beatty gave significant play to the great disillusionment from many of the historical figures with the way the Russian Revolution rolled out over time, and numerous other ways he told John's life's story, Beatty painted a vast mural of the time.
"REDS" presents these historical events interwoven with "the witnesses" first hand remembrances. This deeply enriches every tale that "the witnesses" helped to develop. Some of "the witnesses" were friends of the real-life characters; some were in some ways adversarial. The sum total brings great authenticity throughout the film.
