The Watcher (2022)
To Those Complaining About the Ending...
I just finished season 1 and have seen many reviews on here complaining that there is no reveal at the end, and this is a waste of time...but this is a series, and there will be a season 2...therefore, we will get more answers...
So, don't be deterred by some of the negative reviews complaining about the ending...we haven't gotten the ending yet...
As of the time of writing this, season 1 has concluded in 2022 with season 2 scheduled for 2023...
I am not sure if season 2 will be the last or if they will continue the series beyond that, but season 1 was pretty good overall; it just left some things unexplained to open the door for the next season...
Give it a go for yourself! Just know the end of season 1 leaves some questions unanswered, which I assume will be answered by the end of the series (however long that may be).
Paranormal Activity: Next of Kin (2021)
It was Okay. Not Terrible, but not Very Good.
I am writing a review b/c there are no other reviews for anyone to read for the time being, so I thought I'd be the first to post a review to give viewers an idea if this is something they'd like to watch, or not...
Me personally, I liked the first 5 Paranormal Activity movies; especially when they came out they felt fresh, and raw. I hated the 6th one, and stopped watching since...until this one, I watched today...
So I will just say this doesn't feel the same as the first few installments of the franchise...they added a score for parts on this one, and that takes away from that authentic feeling the others offered...
When that camera dropped at the end of part 3, and then the credits popped up to silence, it felt like you were watching raw footage...but this one here, feels like a movie...
And if that's what you're looking for, give this one a go...but if you're looking for Paranormal Activity you probably won't like this one very much...
As far as the execution goes, I think the premise was decent, and the lead girl was pretty good; she was pretty likable and so that's a plus; the rest of the cast were pretty good acting, as well, even though some of the characters were annoying at times; particularly the comic relief guy, the sound guy; he was a bit irritating to me, but other than that the characters were okay...
I think the biggest problem many will have is that unfortunately there's nothing new here; it started out with promise, and it wasn't long before the jump scares started happening, and they were pretty bad; most times I didn't even flinch...
Then as the story progressed, it was mostly the same stuff horror buffs have seen dozens of times before...and I have to say the ending felt a bit silly; it wasn't as bad as some terrible endings I've seen, but it could have been a lot better...
The 3rd acts of the PA installments have been some of the most intense I've seen in all of horror (especially part 3) and I was hoping for that here, as well, but unfortunately it didn't really feel like a PA movie; they showed way too much, and it took away from the mystery that made the other PA films work so well...
And then after it's over, music starts playing to the credits, and it doesn't even feel like a Paranormal Activity film, but more like a mediocre horror you've seen plenty of times before...
If you're not picky and are just looking for a new horror film to watch, then I recommend this one b/c the acting, writing and pacing is pretty good, so it's not a stinker...but if you're looking for something of high quality and are hoping it's on the same level as the earlier installments in the PA franchise, then you're likely going to be disappointed with this one...
But as I said, there are many others that are worse.
Midnight Mass (2021)
Give Hamish LinkLater an Emmy or Golden Globe!
The show was only okay, but Hamish Linklater gave an Academy Award caliber performance! I've only seen him on sitcoms, or in bit parts before this, but this guy just proved he belongs in the big leagues! He did a great job acting with his eyes; conveying emotion with your eyes is how you act. Zach Gilford also did a great job, as well...
But I think Linklater proved his worth here, and belongs in the top-tier level of actors. I hope others notice this, as well, and he gets some consideration, and doesn't just go unnoticed...
I really wish IMDB still had the message boards so we could chat, b/c I'd be interested in knowing what others thought about his performance.
The Sinner (2017)
Judge Season 3 For Yourself. Some People Love It.
I just wanted to post a review to those who may have been turned-off by the negative reviews for season 3. Yes, season 3 may not be for everyone, but it is worth starting and watching to see what you think for yourself...
Season 3 is very different from season 1 & 2, and I actually appreciated that; had they repeated the same formula from the previous seasons I likely would not return to the series. I did like seasons 1 & 2, but I felt like the outcomes were predictable, and if season 3 followed suit then I wouldn't feel a need to watch season 4 b/c I'd expect the same thing...
But season 3 did what was necessary for the longevity of the series, which was to shake-up the formula. And I totally agree that season 3 is not for everyone; it's very different from the others - and I agree there were some idiotic things done by some of the characters...but the difference is season 3 wasn't about police procedure accuracies, etc. it was about what a person struggles with when having a mental breakdown, and if there is a way to help them...
So, in order to keep that narrative going, they had to overlook some inaccuracies, and put the focus on what was going on with Jamie (Matt Bomer); the point of the plot wasn't about if he was going to get caught, and how to catch him, etc. but was more about WHAT is driving Jamie to feel this way, and is he going to stop hurting people on his own, or is he going to grow into a monster? THAT was the point. Can he control himself? Can he change? And if you watch it for those reasons, you can overlook some of the questionable things the writers included in order to prolong Jamie's story...
If that doesn't sound interesting to you, that's perfectly okay and you should probably skip this season; but let's not downvote this series b/c they dared to try something new and mix-up the formula a bit. People are on here acting as if this was as bad as "Twilight" or "Speed 2" or something. Rating it 1? 1's should be reserved for films with bad acting, directing and writing; you may not have liked the direction season 3 took, but to give it a 1 is not fair, or accurate. Bomer's acting was solid enough to give a few stars even if you hated the season.
