Cake (2014)
Good but could be better
I was weary of watching this to begin with after reading a brief description and watching the trailer, as many films attempting to portray mental health problems do so badly, and with no offence intended to Jennifer Anniston - I did not think she would've been the best choice of actress for the role. I was, however, pleasantly surprised by the acting within the film and the deep and interesting storyline.
The idea of a character seeing someone who has died in most films bores me, but the strange relationship between Claire (A chronic pain sufferer with a drug addiction) and Nina (a once chronic pain sufferer who had recently committed suicide) is a very well played one and really adds to the film.
I do, however, feel as though the film focuses more on things that haven't been explained or spoke about in a weird way, which if you, like me, prefer all stories and films to make complete sense and to know all the facts this film may not be for you. It really does look at mental health problems in a very sensitive but open way, showing the truth of how some problems are for people which many people don't see.
All in all the directors/writers could've gone a lot further, bigger and better with this film, I would still however recommend it to people, as long as you don't mind quite a slow moving storyline.
Mockingbird (2014)
Massive let down!
After seeing the cover and trailer for this film it seemed like a great pick.. How wrong was I! It starts and stops a lot - definitely lacks continuity - and looks as though it was made in 1995 never mind just set then.
The actual film is okay I guess, it all makes you want to keep watching despite the poor storyline to see who is behind these mysterious cameras, gifts and notes being left on people's door steps. The highlight for me really was how excited the guy dressed as a clown got doing his treasure hunt so to speak. The couple and young girl who were being tormented in their homes however - very boring. A few jumpy moments but nothing terribly scary or watch worthy unfortunately. The end was particularly confusing and disappointing for me.. 2 guns yet 4 people get shot dead all at once? And don't even get me started on a group of children being behind the whole thing! Absolutely ridiculous and very unrealistic.. It's an okay watch, but it won't be near the top of my recommendation list I can assure you, and I'm certainly not in a hurry to watch it again.
