Dime with a Halo (1963)
Not a children's film"Dime with a Halo"
If one follows the plot carefully, you would see the dilemma of a single Chicana mother trying her best to raise and feed her kids in Los Angeles Despite being an American citizen( without any social or governmental support) She goes to TJ to become a prostitute. I think it is very degrading for her kids to hear her make love to strangers in her house. I found it very offensive. The redeemer of the story is the White guy with a conscious who falls for her and has the winning ticket to the races. Its is sad when he loses the ticket due to a heart attack. and the family remains in poverty and degrading prostitution.American audiences in 1963 confused native born Chicanos born and raised in the United States with those in Mexico. As a matter of fact that was the basis for the Zoot Suit Riots in L.A. in 1943. Southerns and Midwestern whites used to the Mexican put as( prostitutes) who threw themselves at these me thought that the Chicanas of L.A. who were proud American citizen and whose fathers and brothers were fighting the war mostly in the Pacific deserved respect. Unfortunately, the L.A. Sheriffs and LAPD thought otherwise and turned their back on the beatings and stripping of young( most Zoot Suiters were below 18 years) and jailed the victims. As I said I would it demeaning that this young Chicano youngster had to hear and see strange me making love to his mother and her loving it. It was an awful image.
