It Follows (2014)
over hyped but worth it
My favorite horror film in a long long time. It was so over hyped in the film festival circuit that I was refusing to see it. However, I now see why. The plot is so simple yet so awesome!! best set up!! It was beautifully shot, loved the long takes. Especially loved the scene in the high school with the camera spinning...then we get a glimpse of an "it" - also something about old people slowly walking towards you is so creepy!! Great acting. Srsly this is a must see for a horror fan. I think the end could have been stronger , but really who cares... the rest of the film is strong enough to overlook and weakness. I can't wait to see what this director has up his sleeve next.
We Are Still Here (2015)
tongue in cheek horror
I watched it twice, first time with no clue on its tone... second time was much more enjoyable! The thing is, you have to get the jokes in this film... if you take it too seriously you're missing the point. Its a fun throwback with lots of gore at the end. Relax , have a drink and enjoy. Great job from a first time film maker. I am curious about the budget, and how they got around permits? also anyone know where this was shot? If you enjoy big budget horror, you may not like this as much as I did, it's indie. my "writer" friend didn't enjoy either as he was too busy dissecting the plot, no its not the typical structure...but its a fun movie.
Another (2014)
a neo giallo
not sure if a general audience will get what its referencing, but I loved it. over the top scenes? check - nice cinematography? check - a weird mystery? check - cheesy fx mixed with beautiful shots? check-
The main actress is mesmerizing, but in an unusual way.
The Aunt character is magnificent. Deranged , but with a hint if concern. That actress did a great job.
The story ( in straightforward way ) would have appealed a larger audience, but the cutting and "weirdness" will alienate many.
I can't imagine watching this with my teen nieces that love mainstream horror, can't be said enough... this is the opposite of mainstream.
