Ghosts of War (2020)
This was so satisfying
I must admit, the twist at the end was completely unexpected. Usually I can sense when something is going to change but not with this one!
The story was extremely satisfying.
I was totally into the World War 2 ghost story. The story up until then was great but when the twist, the first twist happened, I sat straight up! Then as the true plot was revealed I reveled in it!
I know many are giving this a low score and I can see why. You're watching A then B happens, unresolved. But I'm the kind of movie goer that loves these kinds of things. Not wrapping it up in a nice, tidy, bow is my kind of thing.
It allows you to determine what could be the ending, although I admit, this movie may not have an ending! Fun!!!
The Queen's Gambit (2020)
This gem is worth more than diamonds
Stop the presses!! Hold the phone!! I just fell in love with a mini-series that blind sided me in the most delicious way ever! The Queens Gambit was a recommendation from my oldest daughter who was gushing over it, finishing it in one day (I will be too, fyi)! This is not my usual enjoyment but I am ever thankful I gave this a shot! From the opening to the end, the characters and writing held me breathless and the period design & apparel was damn well on point! The big 10 rating, though, goes to performances all around. If this doesn't garner some serious hardware and recognition come awards season, I will be astonished! Wow, a real gem! The rarest and most priceless kind!
Anesthesia (2015)
A surprisingly brilliant movie
I found this movie completely by accident but I ended up very satisfied that I gave this movie a shot. The stories were diverse, the acting was captivating and how the stories all got pulled together was satisfying to me.
I will admit this is not my usual genre of movie. I had no idea at the time that it was an indie film but, upon watching it, I soon surmised it. It was...a breath of fresh air. I truly enjoyed every performance.
3022 (2019)
I loved the "realism" of this movie.
Ok, the title of this review is a bit confusing but for good reason. It's a movie based well into the future, in space, but the realism comes from the psychological effects experienced in this movie.
It starts off with the usual excitement but descends into real paranoia and the bitter feelings of longing not to mention the morose of being only 4 persons locked up in a tin can for years.
Add to that a catastrophe that shakes everyone to their core and you have one heck of a recipe for a good movie. Good, not great. Still, I never turned away once. I was glued to this movie. I'm glad it never had a bigger budget because I loved the isolation and darkness the movie projected. A big budget would have added too many effects, blinking lights and other of the usual sci fi accruments that muddle things whilst burying the narrative.
No, the story is the thing here. The bleak hopelessness this movie projected along with just the right dash of hope.
A delicious combination.
Bad Times at the El Royale (2018)
This movie is worth it!
OK, so, this movie took me on a rollercoaster of emotion from curiosity to amusement, stoic viewing to edge of my seat participation, anger and revulsion to a satisfying end. This movie rocked me and that's a very rare thing for me. Very rare. I will say this, the performances were brilliant, every one of them. This movie is Oscar gold!!!
Ghosts of Mars (2001)
Carpenter is a genre of his own
This movie, like all Carpenter movies, should be looked at a bit differently than others. Just like The Thing and Escape From New York, his movies had a very unique feel and look to them. You can easily tell a Carpenter movie from any other! When I rate this, I do it as compared to others that he has directed, created, wrote. It's NOT a classic like The Thing or Escape From New York but I still love it for what it is...a sci-fi action horror. Great characters, I love how the scenes are repeated from different points of view just like old detective stories were presented, and the concept was pure fun!!! Action, gratuitous blasting of murderous zombie-like antagonists, and cliché's galore! It's FUN, gang, not serious! A great movie at parties! I've seen it nearly 20 times and I still get a kick out of it! Carpenter rules!!!!!!!!
Untraceable (2008)
Unwatchable
I tried.I really tried but this movie was made for invoking shock...nothing more. Firstly, this review is full of Spoilers so don't read if you want to be surprised by this cinematic masterpiece. The portrayal of impotent law enforcement and an "cybercop" that shifts seamlessly from investigating this gruesome killer to being a perfect single mom was seriously unrealistic. The killings were elaborate, too elaborate to be believed. Kind of like when Goldfinger tied James Bond up to a block and tried to cut him up with an industrial laser. This killer would have to have pretty deep pockets and serious engineering skills. I don't know because I stopped watching right around the Sulfuric Acid scene. The acting was just too far below the bar to swallow. It's as if the actors just mailed in their performances, saving their true ability for another movie. I'm serious. This movie stunk.
Serbuan maut 2: Berandal (2014)
Berandal is a brilliant follow-up to redemption!
I just finished watching the long awaited Indonesian film The Raid 2: Berandal. The sequel to The Raid: Redemption. I was happily amazed at the complexity of the story, the acting, the camera work and the action. Oh, the fight sequences were amazing. If you don't mind subtitles, you should watch this but see The Raid: Redemption first to be sure because Berandal follows up where Redemption finishes. If you miss the first, you won't understand Berandal as well as you should. One thing that stands out at me in both movies is the character of the villains. The colour they put into each villain makes you want to follow their stories within the story. The cops are portrayed as more "black and white". It makes you question where you want to put your loyalties during the course of the movie. It makes you connect with the bad guys but ultimately you cheer for the hero. His character was written beautifully! 9 stars out of 10!!! I loved this movie!!!!!
Apollo 18 (2011)
An interesting concept but the delivery left me...wanting.
The movie had potential but the camera work throughout the movie was distracting. I understand that the camera work was on purpose but it was just too much distortion to make it easy to follow. Not the same as the "lost footage" from The Blair Witch Project. The concept was sound, though. With more mainstream camera work it would have been more entertaining. Still, I liked it. The actors certainly held the movie together. Spoiler alert: They did a good job acting the slow deterioration into madness. Aliens, paranoia, and secrets. A cool mix! The idea of the plot taking place on the moon was adhered to throughout the movie. I almost felt claustrophobic watching it!
The Last Days on Mars (2013)
A great horror flick that had more potential.
I liked it!!! I didn't love it, but I liked it!!! A great sci-fi horror movie. That's all I expected from it and I liked it. One thing, though and this may be a spoiler of sorts so consider yourself warned. All the dialogue that was at the beginning left me wishing that the whole movie could have been like that, not fall to the usual horror genre. The beginning was very intelligent and entertaining. The actors were very good together! The back and fourth worked. Too bad it had to fall to the monster movie thrill pack it ended up being although I liked the ending. Yes, I got what I expected and I liked it. It's just...it had the potential to be so much more.
