Angel by Thursday (2021)
Not a great start for this writer/director
Plot? Yeah, it had one. It wasn't perfect, but it'll do.
Acting? Pretty stiff. Olga Kalashnikova definitely tries too hard, and her overacting is painfully cringeworthy for most of the film. Kenneth Matepi has a few stiff moments, but he's mostly believable. Some of his lines, particularly early on in the film, were corny and rather limiting. Overall, I think he'd have been more fluid in his native accent. Some of the minor roles actually seemed to be more believable actors. The young Tobias family was impressively smooth.
The cinematography is reasonably well done, especially for an indie, and shows some nice local scenery. One odd element tho, is that Wallace chose to set the film in summer and make big waves at Waimea Bay a key plot point, when winter is the time for north shore surf. Seems like a basic oversight that nobody bothered to correct, and anyone who knows the islands will probably raise an eyebrow.
Mulan (2020)
How did this go so badly?
I understand and accept that it's a REIMAGINING and NOT A REMAKE. That's fine. I was on-board and fully prepared to not compare to the original and to treat it as its own work.
The story was choppy and spent lots of time developing certain elements, and rushed through what should have been main plot points. The acting was mostly terrible. Mulan and a few of her fellow soldiers were fine, but everyone else greatly disgraced their families.
Don't make the same mistake Disney did by giving this the time of day.
Aquaman (2018)
Trash
Cheesy CG, terrible plot, dialogue, and acting. I'm glad this was free from the library, because I'm going to sleep through the rest while my 11 year old finishes the rest. Goodnight.
