House M.D.: Histories (2005)
Haunting
This episode has never left me. It's one of the few House episodes that I remember with specific details. Foreman is the lead doctor when a homeless woman is taken to the ER. Foreman is basically judgmental and dismissive of the woman, who is masterly portrayed by actress Leslie Hope. Wilson, on the other hand, is far more caring and interested in finding out what's wrong with her, while Foreman just wants to discharge her so he can be done with her. He assumes she's gaming the system for a free bed and a few free meals. We know nothing about the woman, including her name or how she ended up homeless. As the episode proceeds, we slowly learn she is tortured by her past, but why? I won't spoil the reveal or ending, other than to say it was a gut punch and I was left bawling. And more true to life, this time there was no miracle cure. To this day, 18 years later, the episode still hauntingly lingers, occasionally surfacing in my memories. And the ending is still devastating.
Pepsi, Where's My Jet? (2022)
It's a fun, fast watch
"Pepsi, Where's My Jet" is a four-episode ducuseries about an ad campaign, that ran decades ago, went south on Pepsi. I remember this ad campaign, including ads in magazines, newspapers and TV. The commercial featured a young teen showing up for school by flying a Harrier. You could earn points to buy Pepsi branded stuff. It also said you could get a Harrier for 7M points. And a kid/young man gamed the system and bought the jet. But Pepsi balked, claiming it was a joke. I enjoyed the back story and was Shocked by an unexpected character to show up! It was nice to find out what eventually happened. It was a fun, fast watch.
Keep Breathing (2022)
FF through the flashbacks
The series is about a woman during two time periods of her life, her present post-plane crash in survival mode and flashbacks to her life before the crash. Skip the flashbacks. They are filler and a drag on the story. The survival storyline is the only part worth watching, and even those scenes were often confounding. She makes so many obvious mistakes. It's a tedious watch, even ff'ing through the flashbacks. Six episodes in and I'm not sure I care if she survives despite herself.
All Summer in a Day (1982)
Decades later, this film haunts me
I saw this beautiful, heart-breaking movie on HBO decades ago. I have not seen it since, but to this day it still haunts me. I would love to see it again! I wish I could find it on DVD or some streaming service. I think schools should show this film to every child. There are so many lessons to be learned about bullying, cruelty and, ultimately, forgiveness.
I met Ray Bradbury at a book signing in Berkeley, CA a number of years ago. I bought one of his books that contained this short story and had it opened to that page for him to sign. He asked me if I had seen the movie, and I told him I had seen it many years before and how moved I was by it. He seemed to be very happy with the film and then shared that this story was his wife's favorite.
