Justified: City Primeval: Kokomo (2023)
Justified has jumped the shark...
Having an already sparse storyline combined with barely capable actors that compensate by overacting, I am left to wonder why Tim Olyphant decided to go along with this "project". Maybe he was just lucky to have been involved with the original show and doesn't realize what he's doing. Even when assessing this on its own merits, it's awful. The original is one of my favorites of all time, and this "thing" taints it's lineage. And then we have Kokomo. Progressing the absurd narrative of a budding romance between the lawyer Carolyn and Raylan, Olyphant is simply mailing his in performance, week after week.
And then we have the scene in which the episode, and the show, jump the shark. Clement is selling Sweety on where they'll go to "getaway", and mentions Aruba. Then Jamaica, and then, yes, you guessed it, sings to Sweety "ooh I wanna take ya. Bermuda, Bahama, come on pretty mama
Key Largo, Montego, Baby, why don't we go?", as the music swells with The Beach Boys song . I seriously thought that the cast was going to go
into a syncopated dance routine! This not only bears absolutely no resemblance to the original "Justified", but is also one of the worst series I've ever watched.
Shaking my head... too bad.
Animal Kingdom: Inside Man (2022)
This production has ran out of inspiration...
Too much backstory and exposition for a show in it's final season. Who cares about young dour pope? Waaaay too much wasted time here, and we get it already; Hatosy can ride a skateboard a bit...smh.
Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty: California Dreaming (2022)
Just dreck... smh
Literally a sewage filled episode in a blatantly ugly and slanderous series. I encourage Jerry West to sue hbo for their depiction of him. The final scene of Jerry Buss sexually attacking his mother's terminal cancer caretaker isn't titillating or exciting or relatable... it's disgusting. What is hbo trying to prove, that they hate the Los Angeles Lakers? I wasn't expecting a Michael Jordan "The Last Dance" type of documentary, but this series is garbage. I'm finished with this series and Hbo is canceled.
Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty: The Best Is Yet to Come (2022)
Series is getting worse...
I've been a Laker fan since the age of 9, and was ready and expecting to love this series... smh
My ratings so far:
Episode 1 - 6
Episode 2 - 5
Episode 3 - 3
I'm disappointed that this isn't more of a docu-drama, and instead is a farcical, tongue in cheek, hardeharhar look back that's getting worse.
E3 is a real pos.
The Righteous Gemstones (2019)
Insipid, banal, smh...
If you must, watch the first 2 or 3 minutes of episode 1; you will then know with accuracy if this show is for you. Splashing water on each other in the pool. The high ratings are amazing. "Nobody ever went broke underestimating the intelligence of the American people. I watched the entire first episode. Funny, perhaps, if you're a dull witted 10 or 11 year old. Everyone involved in making this pos is laughing all the way to the bank, while shaking their heads. If HBO builds upon this path, they're canceled...
Counterpart: Better Angels (2019)
Not compelling... nothing to see here
I just wanted this failed experiment in drama to be over, already. I didn't care for or feel any empathy for any character, except perhaps Emily prime. Going forward, I promise myself to be more discerning in my television choices.
I Care a Lot (2020)
Just Dreck... smh
This POS movies only (barely) redeeming quality was the ending. If it hadn't have been for that, this deserves a less than zero rating.
Despicable antagonists become the protagonists you're supposed to root for because the REAL antagonists are... Russians?!?
Dream of Italy (2015)
I would guess that her family LOVES these home movies...
Myself, not so much. Have been to Italy several times, and would like to see more of it, I.e., less of her.
Jim Gaffigan: Quality Time (2019)
Laugh track for a "live" comedy show?!
I gave this a full 5 minutes... untucked 3X shirts, fat jokes, and the audience is IMMEDIATELY laughing hysterically. Having attended and watched on television many comedians, this is IMMEDIATELY suspect. Even the best need to warm up a bit, but this fella has them in stitches right away, with bad material, and I don't believe it's real. Stopped and deleted. Smh
Unacknowledged (2017)
Overproduced
Good doc, but they're trying too hard. Overly dramatic music, edits, multiple camera angles in single interview, scenes containing images having nothing to do with information being discussed...whew! All serves to distract, keep it simple next time.
Banshee (2013)
Terrific fighting choreography!
Expertly choreographed, executed, and filmed fight scenes; seriously well done. Well written, if cartoonish characters... carrying on with over the top violence. Very high production values, great casting. As other reviewers have already said, if you like John Wick, this is for you.
Sneaky Pete (2015)
S1-8; S2-6; S3-3; Overall-4
WAY TOO MUCH backstory regarding the mother, etc., etc., etc., ad nauseum, episode after episode after episode... for WAY TOO LITTLE payoff. This season at times bordered on farce; I wonder if intentionally. Caper stories need to be believable, even when extremely improbable. Sneaky Pete has just become ridiculous to the point of not being entertaining. When the con FINALLY comes together, you'll be shaking your head. Waste of time, smh.
The Meg (2018)
Underrated!
Well written. Well directed. I cared about the characters because they were multi layered and human. So what if this is implausible sci-fi, that only make if more difficult to instill dramatic overtones, ESPECIALLY in sci-fi. An unexpected twist, maybe somewhat expected because the story seemed to be at its conclusion at just over halfway through. I'm not getting the hate directed at this movie! Much more here than I thought...
Tin Star (2017)
Tooo sloooow...
Tries to be compelling, but isn't. One good point is, you can read a book while watching!
Polar (2019)
Compelling...
...with a surprising reveal in the last act. I was surprised that I hadn't figured it out, so good storytelling! The cartoonish characters some other reviewers didn't care for added a stylistic quality to the movie, imo. Over the top violence, reminded me of the Paul Giamatti, Clive Owen pic Shoot 'Em Up; again, it was cartoonish. Vanessa Hudgens has some acting chops, her several monologues were real, believable. I know that this film isn't for everyone, but I thought it's stylized nature was kind of cool.
Patriot (2015)
#prettygood
So, I just finished S2. S1 was a 9, and S2 is a 5, so my average score for Patriot is 7... which is "pretty good". S2 felt like an assignment to get through, excruciating most of the time. What they do do well, in both seasons, is to be mysteriously compelling. I'll say this, I haven't seen anything like it... quality actors, drama, camera, direction.
Tin Star (2017)
Tooo sloooow...
Tries to be compelling, but isn't. One good point is, you can read a book while watching!
Goliath (2016)
Thanks for the heads up...
Ok, based on season 1 (which was great), I watched the first 3 episodes of season 2. Based on what I've seen so far (especially the conclusion of episode 3), and these reviews, I've reclaimed hours of free time that would otherwise be on this garbage. I owe you that have posted a debt of gratitude; thanks again!
Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014)
Just dreck...
crass: adjective lacking sensitivity, refinement, or intelligence. synonyms: stupid, insensitive, mindless, thoughtless, ignorant, witless, oafish, boorish, asinine, coarse, gross, graceless, tasteless, tactless, clumsy, heavy-handed, blundering.
The intended audience has to be room temperature IQ or below. Over- the-top, horrific violence by nonsense cartoon characters only for the sake of displaying the violence itself. CGI only for CGI's sake. Humor of the lowest common denominator. The "unrefined, but promising street kid" goes from no skills to world class martial artist bullet dodger with no training.
Here it is for you in a nutshell... If you're a fan of the Bourne movies and Daniel Craig's Bond series, or even the Mission Impossible franchise, do not waste your time with this... I wish that I hadn't.
