Time doesn't change everything
28 February 2021
I saw this movie in the theater when it first came out, and never again, until today. I saw the dvd for 50¢ at a thrift shop and remembered not liking it, but not really why, so I bought it to find out. Spoiler alert - was not worth the money.

The movie just ended and yes, I still did not like it and remember why I felt that way in the first place. This is one of those movies that's trying really hard to be a accurate and poignant slice of life film but doesn't quite get there.

You don't find out why any of these characters even like each other, but that's just as well because you won't like them either. And the theme seems to be something along the lines of "Don't try to further your life and expect your husband/boyfriend to act like a responsible adult because it will drive him into the arms of a randomly placed brunette."

Both the men and women in this movie are just stereotypes interacting with one another and who are all victims in their own stories.

Ladies - please don't accept "I was scared and now I know that I love you" as an apology.

probably not worth the time
13 September 2017
Came across this movie on Netflix and it gave off a Bonnie and Clyde impression, which as it turns out is not at all the way it went. There's a scene where they discuss how they'd go about robbing a place, but that's as far as the Bonnie and Clyde vibe goes.

The main characters' "meet cute" moment was a typical guy saves girl scenario where the guy is suddenly so inclined to offer the girl sanctuary from whatever it is that ails her. We find out more about her and you kind of realize pretty quickly how the two are going to be connected. Emile Hirsch and Zoe Kravitz are great actors on their own, but together they don't seem to mesh. Their relationship was not really believable and they don't seem to even see each other in their scenes.

I thought maybe I'd missed something, because the plot felt so weak, but no, it really was just kind of a weak plot -- as if the writer/ director were like "ok we'll come back to this part and beef it up and make it better" -- but then they never really went back. The characters didn't really develop or change in any way; they were static and flat. I feel like Emory Cohen's character was supposed to be a comic relief, and while I think he is a great actor (the OA, Brooklyn) here, he was mostly just a token, and his girlfriend was a throwaway. Maybe you're supposed to care about them, maybe a little bit? But you don't.

The real action seems to come up out of nowhere, which I suppose can be true of life because sometimes everything just blows up when you don't expect it...but it doesn't really work well here. Remember when I said the plot was weak and I felt like someone said they'd go back later to beef it up? I think they threw all the beef into the stew that is the finale. These scenes are pretty brutal and violent, and it's like where did this come from?? (Ron Burgundy is coming to mind ...that escalated quickly...)

I'm not going to tell you how to live your life, so watch it if you want. It filled an hour and 40 minutes of my life, and will do the same for you. Don't expect anything great but also don't expect anything colossally terrible. This movie is basically your local grocery store's generic brand version of Drive.

Give this a chance
15 August 2017
If you're like me, then you came across Flaked kind of randomly and decided to give it a shot based on the fact Will Arnett is the main character. Arrested Development is one of my favorite shows and I enjoy Will Arnett in the comedies he's released.

This show, while having its funny moments is not that kind of show, so don't expect a Gob Bluth performance.

I'm inclined to believe some of the more negative reviews on this site were written by people who've not watched the entire first season, and those reviews are in fact the reason I am here now writing my very first IMDb review.

Arnett's Chip is not a super likable guy, but deserves the chance for you to allow him to evolve. The viewer will get a better understanding of Chip as the show goes on.

I really suggest watching the entire first season. The writing is good. The main characters are good. A couple of the secondary characters, one in particular, really doesn't add much and could be written out and never missed, but I assume were included to add some humor. There are two stand out moments that, I promise you, you'll be glad you gave this show a chance. On to season 2!
