Gacy: Serial Killer Next Door (2024)
Not for those looking for the realistic approach.
What can I say about this film that hasn't already been said?
Well, if you are researching the Gacy case, then this certainly isn't for you. This is a film that skirts around the terrible crimes that Gacy committed and even though it isn't the best acting, it certainly isn't the worst I've seen. But it is still pretty bad.
This fictional version of the case that gripped the nation in the 1970s, is somewhat different, but I don't think it's supposed to be an accurate account of what actually happened. So if you look at it as a cheaply made film, that has its own story to tell. Then you might just be able to watch it on a late night when there's nothing else on TV.
One thing that really stood out to me though was the kids mother's lips. I'm not saying anything else about them, but I'm sure you'll notice when you watch the film.
Anyway, I've been generous by giving it 4 stars, just because of the time spent making the film. But it's hard to remake a story that has been done so many times with some A list actors.
The Devil on Trial (2023)
Cashing in?
The film is what claims to be a fact based documentary about a young boy who was apparently possessed by the devil.
This is quiet well produced and watchable, but certainly not unmissable.
Without giving the full story away. I would describe the claims as ridiculous and it gives the feeling like they are trying to cash in on the current trend of films that relate to investigations by paranormal investigators "Ed and Lorraine Warren" in the hope their story will be made into a feature film. So, you could be looking at another Conjuring movie waiting in the wings.
However, if you are into the paranormal and things that go bump in the night, then you might enjoy this. But for me it was something I watched on a slow night.
Breach (2020)
What did I just watch?
When I read everyone's reviews I thought they where exaggerating on how bad it was. But it really is that bad.
I've seen amateur short films better than this, because everything and I mean everything about this film was terrible.
The story, the sets and the acting was nothing short of a low budget shock fest in the worst possible way.
One of the writers has cast himself obviously so he can say he has acted with an A lister like Bruce. But hey why not?
I wouldn't recommend even wasting your time in watching this.
Beat Street (1984)
History in the making
With Breakdancing now being placed into the Olympics, you can now see why by the acrobatic skills The Rock Steady Crew and New York City Breakers show in this film that is now a must for any break dancer worth their salt to watch.
The film portrays life how a British person like myself in the 1980s would have expected it to be in the Bronx during that period. And whether it was or wasn't doesn't matter, as this helped the film achieve the right feeling that young breakers could associate with back in the early days.
The most iconic scene has to be the Roxy battle and even watching it now gives me goose bumps because of the realism it gives which in turn sparks good memories for us old B-Boys & Girls.
This is definitely ranked up there as a classic dance film, even if the acting was the best. The dancing was fantastic.
Beneath Loch Ness (2001)
It really is that bad
Even though this was released in 2001, the film is so bad that it makes you wonder how it's still being purchased by TV channels in 2018?
The CGI is really bad, even for a time when it was in it's infancy and the acting is shocking to say the least. The accents certainly don't sound Scottish by any stretch of the imagination and border more on the Irish, but even that is debatable.
This definitely one of those films you would rather forget.
Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle (2017)
Entertainment for the family
I have to say that I was dreading this, but to my surprise it was very entertaining and I actually watched the whole film, when I thought I wouldn't.
Was it as good as the original? In some ways yes and I found the comedy parts funny enough to keep me laughing and kept me entertained along with my family. But in other ways I thought it should have been a sequel to the original rather than a revamp.
But where the changes to the story warranted? Again, yes I think they were and it brought the film bang up to date. It was well written and very well acted out by all actors and I would definitely like to see a part two with the same cast.
Red Sparrow (2018)
I had high hopes
I had such high hopes for this film, but unfortunately they were dashed by a very slow film that eventually saw me noding off before the end.
I found it hard to keep up with what was going in in parts, but maybe that was because of my lack of interest as the film just seemed to drone on.
However, saying that the acting from Miss Lawrence was a bit better than the script and I think the highlight of the whole film was when we evenly got to see her part nude.
So, all in all it was not as good as I hoped and I certainly wouldn't want to see a part two.
Badder Ben: The Final Chapter (2017)
Not the best
I actually liked Bad Ben and thought it was put together quite well despite it being shot, acted and edited by one guy.
However, this really wasn't the best and it was almost like it was a bunch of friends making a movie for something to do on a weekend because they were bored.
I found it strange that there was no music anywhere in the film to help cause tension etc.
Other than that, at least this guy got off his backside and got out there put something together regardless of whether it was good or bad. But unfortunately I cant give it a rating higher than a 3.
Bad Ben (2016)
Very nice effort
I have to say I have become dismayed by the horror genre lately, especially the over hyped, over budgeted Hollywood remakes. I also don't like the found footage style.
However, saying that. I found this to be a breath of fresh air despite its low budget.
OK, there was only one guy in it, but for an unknown, I can honestly say I enjoyed his performance and so much so, I am watching the follow up later this week.
So, well done to this man and I look forward to see what else you come up with.
Get Out (2017)
Brilliant
I have to admit that I only watched this because I came across it by flicking through a list of films after a slow night were nothing was on TV.
But to my utter surprise, the film had me gripped and this resulted in me wanting to jump into the film and help the guy. Instantly, I felt like I was part of the film and loved the characters diverse, strange, freakish, demeanour. Coupled with the brilliant acting skills that made you believe the whole thing could actually happen.
The comedic timing was great and I would love to say more about the acting skills of one of the female characters, but this would only give things away and that isn't my intention.
But bravo to all involved and the lead actors were outstanding.
Loved the film, great surprise watch that was well worth it..
Would I watch it again? Yes I would.
It (2017)
Disappointed
I was so hoping that this would stand out as one of the scariest remakes of recent times. But unfortunately it was far from the spectacle that I anticipated and felt like it started to drag in parts.
The jump scares were weak and I think only one actually got me. My wife was dreading seeing it because the whole idea of a scary clown freaked her out, but even she walked away from the cinema asking what the big deal was?
However saying that, I have to applaud the acting from the kids in the film as their parts were well played and they performed the funny punchlines with brilliant timing, much to the amusement of everyone in the audience.
The question is? Would I watch it again? I reluctantly say yes, but only if nothing else was on TV, but personally I would rather watch the original.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
Superb
What can I say that hasn't already been said about this amazing film?
Everything about it is superb. Everything from the acting to the script is one of the most amazing pieces of work to ever hit the screen.
Now I know it is an old film, but it was a classic from the instant it was made and nothing was going to change that as it had the ingredient of a outstanding achievement that any parent would be proud of.
If you struggle to watch this film, then you must struggle with life in general.
I mean even the colour grading and attention to detail was just brilliant and like I said, I cannot say anything else about it that someone wouldn't have already said, apart from, if every film was as good as this, I would never go out again.
