Scare Package II: Rad Chad's Revenge (2022)
Fun sequel to the first!
I don't understand why people are being so critical of this movie. It is what it is, a comedy horror that pokes fun at the whole genre, and gives us plenty of funny moments and ridiculously unbelievable kills. Its filmed beautiful, the editing is great, the fx are incredible, and the actors play it straight. I actually like this better than Scary Movie, as the comedy is found in the shortcomings of the horror genre, and within horror movie kills. Sure it's silly, it's supposed to be. It's a comedy, no doubt, with gore. And it's funny, I laughed and smiled all the way through and felt entertained. Mission accomplished.
A Christmas Horror Story (2015)
Sentimentality and Scares
I'm a big fan of Ginger Snaps, and that team did a remarkable job with A Christmas Horror Story. This anthology style film is a ton of fun, and each story has its own feel and identity. Plenty of thrills, action and gore and a hilarious performance by William Shatner. All the actors are on point and the film doesn't drag. It works as a Christmas movie, and has all the sentimentality we come to expect from holiday films. I watch it every year in addition to all of my other holiday viewings, and it gives me some laughs, a few jumps, and the gore is definitely there, especially towards the end. Highly recommend!
The Munsters (2022)
A fun, whacky, family friendly Halloween treat.
I'm a huge Munsters fan. This movie pays great homage to the source material, shot woth beautiful color pallettes, and is family friendly. I smiled through the whole film, and it's a wonderful addition to family friendly Halloween viewing. Of note: Daniel Roebuck nails The Count (Grandpa) and Richard Brake channels Vincent Price. Everyone does a great job in this film, I don't know why people just want to hate on it. If you watch this film expecting the show, OF COURSE you will be dissatisfied. But Rob Zombie did the right thing by giving us a loving backstory to the characters we all love. Give it a shot!
Severance (2022)
Brilliant!
If you like shows that are well crafted, and really tell an engaging story, then this is for you. If you're expecting comedy because Adam Scott is in it, and Ben Stiller directed it, then politely move along. This is an excellent Sci fi story and explores some interesting ideas about different versions of ourselves. Amazing cast and writing.
The American Barbecue Showdown (2020)
Not a real BBQ show
If you love BBQ shows, like I do, then skip this terrible excuse for a show. I'm sorry for the people who worked on it. But this show is awful. Poor judging, unfair events, and the show isn't bbq centric. They treat bbq like a concept instead of what it .
Spiral: From the Book of Saw (2021)
Much better than Jigsaw
Jigsaw was a confusing mess. This story is much easier to follow and follows a linear path without tons of confusing flashbacks. Chris Rock turns in a great performance, and the kills, while brutal, aren't the star of the film. I hope they do another one.
Willy's Wonderland (2021)
No Bait and Switch Here
This film is exactly what the trailers tell you it is. A superb genre film with(what I believe to be) one of Nic Cage's most memorable performances. Giving a silent performance isn't simple. He had to tell a story using only pantomime, and any backstory is given through supporting characters. Yes, it's low budget, but for those of us who love Corman style genre films, this is a real treat.
The Amusement Park (1975)
An absolute work of art
This PSA in regards to elderly abuse is truly an accomplishment for it's time. Lincoln Maazel turns in a brilliant performance, and you truly begin to feel his desperation. It's allegory is still relevant today. Not a horror film per se, but still frightening in tone.
WNUF Halloween Special (2013)
Brilliant satire on 80's Independent TV Programming
If you grew up in the 1980's, then this little gem will feel familiar. It makes me miss the time when Halloween was a bigger deal to TV programming, and all the commercials, as frustrating as they are, really recreate the viewing experience I remember. I watch this every Halloween season and it always puts me in the Halloween mood.
Terminator: Dark Fate (2019)
Pay no attention to the negative reviews
Pay no attention to the angry posts. This is a worthy entry, and an action packed thrillride. The cast are amazing and the return of Linda Hamilton is the best. As far as the movie having any political or social commentary, it's no different than the other entries. This is the sequel I have wairlted for since T2.
