Arguably, anything past like season 4 or 5 of spongebob has been a disgrace to the iconic first few seasons and the first movie, and a lot of that took place while Hillenburg was still with us, so I assume he didn't really care. But I don't get how this happens with so many things that were once funny... it's like they just forget what it was that made them funny and turn to this formulaic, soulless trash. I had to turn it off shortly after they got to Atlantic City. And this was way too similar (but far worse) to the first Spongebob film... they literally have King Poseidon instead of Neptune, and Plankton using the king to send spongebob on a quest. And for people who say "oh relax it's just a dumb kids show" no, that's not what spongebob originally was, it was art, comedic genius, iconic and major piece of cartoon history, arguably the most successful children's show ever. They absolutely must be paying critics, there's no way we saw the same movie and it got a green score on metacritic and fresh on rotten tomatoes, there's just no way. And WHY do they need to change the animation style?? Not absolutely everything needs to be 3D animation, spongebob was 100% better 2D. I'm so tired of franchises getting totally disrespected because MONEY. But that's a reality that we'll never go away. Ironically Mr Krabs hires that robot to automate his business for MONEY, that's what it feels like Nickelodeon has done, hired robots to make Spongebob now instead of creative people. The Keanu/Snoop Dogg/Danny Trejo (these movies are like Super Bowl ads, just fully relying on celebrity cameos in place of clever content) made me have to pause the film multiple times because I was cringing so hard. Oh my God it was painful, they must have given Snoop Dogg a ton of money to absolutely backhand his reputation like that. Anything new in this film was terrible and the rest were recycled ideas they've already done a million times. They've already had an Atlantis episode, the whole first films plot like i mentioned earlier, and Spongebob losing Gary and needing to find him. This movie is the definition of cash grab, and ironically it didn't even get to release in theaters, but set up this new spin-off spongebob series that looks equally bad. This franchise has gone on far past its welcome, and I'm sad this is what some kids will know spongebob as.
