RFDS (2021)
Totally absorbing series
I love this show and am thrilled that it's been renewed for a third season! I just hope I won't have to wait as long I did between series one and two. The treatment of the relations between the indigenous characters and the "whites" seems very realistic to me. Apart from Taketsubo syndrome, I have no idea if the medical stuff is accurate but the cast certainly sells it! Adding Chara's character to season two was a great idea. Some reviews describe this series as light. In a sense it is because the main characters aren't dark or grim, but they are complex and not without flaws for the most part.
Blown Away (2019)
The contestants 10; the judging 1
I was warned away from the season 1 semi-final and final episodes by the reviews, but I decided to give season 2 a try and enjoyed the first 7 episodes. I don't get upset when my favorite design isn't the judges' first choice; however, I disagreed violently with the elimination decisions in episodes 8 and 9. The reviews that pointed out Katherine's inconsistency in criteria from one episode to the next are on point. The ghastly scripts are getting to me as well. Years ago I remember seeing fine print about the producers having input into the judging for Project Runway and I suspect this is the case here.
Persuasion (2022)
A disaster!
If you think the children playing at Marie Antoinette in a film set in the 1810s is cute and amusing, then this movie is your cup of tea. The stylistic anachronisms pale in comparison to the absolute nonsensical bits. Am I the only person who wondered how long a pet rabbit would survive in a household of open doors and hunting dogs? Am I the only viewer who thought Mary better looking than Elizabeth?
All Creatures Great & Small (2020)
Mixed feelings about this remake
It's been a very long time since I watched the original. The remake has the wonderful landscapes and I think Mrs. Hall is a treat, but the pacing is slower than slow. I think the actors playing James and Helen are mismatched, and it's too bad Diana Rigg didn't live to finish another season. The Farnam brothers are cursed with a script that's not nearly as humorous as the original.
The Great British Bake Off: The Final (2021)
Bakers, 10. Hosts, 2.
I really enjoyed this episode but Matt and Noel are more irritating than poison ivy. A greater contrast to Sue and Mel cannot be imagined. Kudos to the bakers for coping with living in a bubble for several weeks.
As Time Goes By: A Trip to Los Angeles (1994)
Inspired silliness!
The scene in Sy's office is priceless, especially when the L.A. script team presents their adaptation of Jean and Lionel's story. Sometimes the character of Jean, while intended to be comedic exaggeration, instead is just downright annoying, particularly in the middle series of this show. But not in this episode, which really is one of the best.
The Curious Creations of Christine McConnell (2018)
Wonderfully offbeat
If you like Gorey, give this a try. I loved it even though I don't sew or bake or watch horror movies. I hope it gets renewed for a second season because it ends on a bit of a cliffhanger.
