The Twilight of the Golds (1996)
Not at all Like the Play and Completely Disappointing
So I was assigned to read this play in college as a part of my Dramaturgy course and I loved this play. I still love this play. It is a painful look at a family and at acceptance. In the play, the character of David is gay and sort of on the outside of his family. He has these amazing speeches about his love of opera, the ring cycle in particular, and how the characters have to brave through such odds in order to survive.
David too has to survive. He has to struggle with his family, who seem accepting of him, but who are really scared of what they do not know. His family does love him, but they never want to talk about or acknowledge the fact that he is gay and that he has had a partner for about 13 years, the same amount of time his sister has been married.
In the play, his sister becomes pregnant, and though a modern technology that her husband has developed, learns that her child has DNA that might cause her child to be exactly like her brother. Her child would be smart, capable, and possibly gay. She decides that having a gay child would be too much to bear and she has an abortion to get rid of the baby. There is a complication with the abortion and she ends up loosing her uterus.
In the movie however, she keeps the baby. Now, this offends me. I am not gay, but I find it horrific that the script would be changed so drastically. The fact that her character chooses to get rid of the baby is a major turning point of the plot and the core experience of the play. I was shocked to learn that Jonathan Tollins actually wrote the screenplay, because if it were my work that was being bastardized like this, I would refuse. It angers me that the filmmakers did not trust the audience enough to explore the abortion aspect of the piece. It really saddens me.
Ocean's Twelve (2004)
Its a fun movie
So I just read one of the other posts ("a lot if inside jokes") but I could not reply. So they didn't get the Julia Roberts thing? That was pretty obvious and kinda funny, but why don't the other characters look like Brad Pitt or Matt Damon? I like the movie overall because I really liked the first and this movie seemed like Steven Soderberg wanted to take all of his buddies to Europe and get drunk, oh and while they were at it, make a movie. They were having fun, which is what film-making should be. If you go to see it, don't go in thinking it will be god's gift to heist movies. the thing that I love about this movie and the last is that the movie moves so fast that you can't stop and think about how improbable the situations are so you have to believe that they could break into the Belaggio vault or raise a building off the ground so it is at the right height to shoot something into it. It's just fun.
PCU (1994)
Coolest College Movie
I my opinion PCU is the coolest college movie. Yes it is silly and simplistic, but so is college. It comments on our culture in a very clever way and it is just one of those movies that you can have fun while watching.
When I first saw this movie I really thought that college was like the made-up Portchester University and I was a little disappointed to discover it wasn't. College is, however , about having a great time with your friends and trying to discover who you are and what you stand for. PCU shows how the students of Portchester are assertive enough to express their opinions. Jeremy Piven is one of my favorite actors and I do not think he gets enough work or credit. The story does lack a lot of character development, but I would not watch this movie hoping to see the most amazing film ever made. David Spade also shines as the slimy, little conservative rat he is. John Faverau rocks as the idiotic stoner and who can forget the surprise appearance by George Clinton.
