The Apology (2022)
Really a lot better than these reviews.
People just can't read between the lines. From the minute the brother in law shows up, Gunn's acting is superb if you pay attention. The completely strange, awkward dialogue, indicates that on some level, her character has a sense of what's coming. She clearly has some subconscious problem with him. As the story unfolds, we all get clarity. She realizes, she should have known all this before and may be on some level she did. We're brought into the chaos of what her life was like during her crisis and so we're given insight into just how she missed what should have been glaringly obvious to her. There's a lot going on here. Too bad most people missed it.
The Lincoln Lawyer (2022)
It's Really Terrible
We tried, oh we really tried and gave this thing a chance through season 2. But it is flat out awful. It's worse than the worst made for TV trite excuse for a show. I don't mind changing characters from the way they appear in the books, but get someone who can act to play these parts. We are huge fans of the books and huge fan of the movie. This waste of TV time does justice to neither. The stories are ridiculous, the dialogue is trite. The convention of using Lorna to explain Haller's strategy is so inelegant and hackneyed. What is the point? There is so much pointless filler, it's pathetic. Just bad, bad, bad. Do not waste your time.
Mystery Road: Origin (2022)
Love, Love, Love this series
I am a huge fan of Mystery Road, the movies and the TV series. I was worried when this Origin series came out that it would not live up to the other shows and I'm glad I was wrong. Brilliant casting!! So believable. I think Mark Coles Smith makes a great young Jay Swan. The depiction of Australia, racism, corruption, crime are all handled really well. Informative and interesting without being overwhelmingly heavy handed or trite. The writing and plots are spot on. The characters are interesting and believable for a police/detective show. I just can't say enough good things about this series. My only problem is that I have to wait for season 2. Please - more of the same!
Kathleen Madigan: Hunting Bigfoot (2023)
Not Millenials
Like a lot of older people, Kathleen Madigan thinks every young person is a Millenial. In 2023, Millenials are between 27 and 42 years old. The young people she is describing are Gen Z. Even though I like her humor and the show was good, Kathleen has now become part of one of her own jokes. I do like her stories about some of the crackerland places she visits. If you've never been to a backa$$, redneck, small town - she does get this right. They are real. Would love to me her parents someday, they sound like they'd be a ton of fun at a cocktail party. Would love to see more comedy specials with Kathleen. As it is, I am driven to watching all her specials as repeats.
Ray Donovan: The Movie (2022)
Fantastic Wrap Up
This may the best series wrap up movie ever made. Tying up of the loose ends was believable and not contrived. Thank goodness we didn't have to see Connor again. Great decision to ditch his character. And no singing from Bridget - ugh I could not take any more of that. What was the deal, was that written into her series contract? Enough open ended storylines (Brenda and Theresa, Ray's future, Terry's hallucinations peaking) to make it completely valid. The flash back actors did a great job taking us to the original Tommy Wheeler/Ezra Goldman storyline. The movies was better than many of the series episodes. Great job!
The Old Man (2022)
Ratings Based on First Episode - the Rest is Trash
I kept watching after episode two, hoping it would get back to how it started. No such luck. Storyline is unbelievable, dialogue deteriorated quickly. I figured out the plot 10 minutes into the second episode. Amy Brenneman is so boring. And the freaking ridiculous metaphysical conversations between her and Bridges made me want to vomit. It just got worse and worse. Awful, awful, awful ending. Did I say awful?? Don't waste a second on this piece of garbage. What a waste of talent.
The Batman (2022)
My Early Hopes Were Dashed
Well it started out really well. I had high hopes. The atmosphere of the movie was great and different. It wasn't a comic. The acting was good. But either the writer or editing is responsible for this thing turning into a hot mess. Terrible plot, with no real resolution. Superfluous characters. Ugh. Too bad - it could have been so much better.
Yellowstone (2018)
Watchable but I really expected more.
Someone - please, please, please teach these actors some western hat handling and etiquette. If I see Kevin Costner handling the brim of his hat one more tiime......aarrgghhh.
Reacher (2022)
So Much Better Than That Tom Cruise Garbage
Based on a couple of newspaper reviews I was really worried that this was going to be the usual made for TV pablum that is often just pushed out fast and cheap and rarely does any justice to the books. I hated, hated, hated, the travesty made of Reacher by the Tom Cruise movies. This show is true to the books, and Reacher's character. Is it perfect?? No but it's good and entertaining if you like the book series. There is always the problem of representing Reacher's inner dialogues which are a big part of his character, but maybe they'll figure that out.
Pig (2021)
Nicolas Cage is Back!
If all you care about is nonstop action and thrills, this is not the film for you. But if you want to see a well-crafted, unusual character study with an outstanding performance by Cage, give it a chance. Mr. Cage once again (and it's been a long time coming) shows us the depth and breadth of his talent.
Red Notice (2021)
Gal Gadot is sooooo boring.
It's a snooze. Definitely not worth watching.
I can put up the Rock if the rest of the cast and plot are good.
Poor Ryan Reynolds - he should have run from this project.
Freaks (2018)
Should be a Franchise!
Just go see it. It is one of the best science fiction movies to come out in the last 10 years.
Radioactive (2019)
Don't waste your time
This movie is not not factual, not based on a true story and not based on the biography written by Curie's daughter.
It is based on a graphic novel and it is full of made up scenarios and inaccuracies.
And, it isn't even entertaining.
It's fiction and it sucks.
The Vast of Night (2019)
A Vast Waste of Time.
Where has all the good science fiction gone? Terrible - just terrible.
Another Life (2019)
Why - just why?
For the life of me, I can't imagine why anyone would continue to work on this travesty of a sci-fi series. I tried to find one good or at least average thing about it. Writing? atrocious. Directing? worse than atrocious. Acting? seriously bad. Special effects? worse than amateurish. Message? non-existent. This show is a serious waste of time, money and effort. The reviewer who called it 'Millenial's go to space' was right on. It would almost make it as a parody. This show is a great example of why we need a zero or no star rating. How this show has an average rating of 4.1 is a complete mystery.
Uncle John (2015)
FYI - Uncle John is in Wisconsin - not Illinois
This is a response to the reviewer who said that the film did a good job depicting rural Illinois. The small town is set in Wisconsin. Uncle John's truck has Wisconsin plates and filming was done in Lodi Wisconsin which is probably a 2 hour 45 minute drive from downtown Chicago.
Sauk Prairie Recreation Area is an actual place northwest of Lodi. Devil's Lake is not far from there so there is actual terrain with bluffs similar to the one that Uncle John visits, which is likely the site where Dutch killed John's sister Dede (Ben's mother). We know she fell to her death there and supposedly jumped. The motive for John killing Dutch may very well have been a confession by Dutch that he killed her.
There was a comment made in the movie that Dutch had been 'snaking' Dede which suggests that he was pursuing her but that they likely did not have a relationship.
Danny telling John that Dutch told him Dede jumped because maybe she was overwhelmed by being a mom may have been a way for Danny to try to get John to reveal something.
I don't think it was clear anywhere that John's sister was actually married to Dutch or that he was the father of Ben since it was Uncle John that raised Ben.
Agree that the film did a good job depicting a small Wisconsin community.
