Skinamarink (2022)
If you have 1 hr 40 mins to waste
As others have mentioned this needed to be a 20 or 30 minute short film, not a 1 hr 40 min feature length movie. I give the movie credit for its avantgarde style of filmmaking as well as the premise of the movie but that's about it. The Super 8 grainy look and the constant flickering from the various light sources was too much for the length of this movie. Putting that aside, what annoyed me the most is the lack of consistency in the movie's visual point of view. In some cases it was as if you were seeing things through the children's eyes, in other cases it's as if you were seeing things through the lens of a security camera placed on the floor and in other cases it's as if a camera was placed in the middle of the room. I honestly tried to like this movie for its potential plus it had rave reviews but by the end I came away annoyed that I wasted 1 hr 40 mins of my life.
Violent Night (2022)
Destined to become a Christmas classic :-)
I honestly didn't know what to expect with this movie but I certainly wasn't disappointed by the end. For anyone who likes to enjoy the darker side of Christmas then this movie is for you. I think what surprised me the most is that the movie wasn't about a crazed killer dressed like Santa. The movie was above that and despite its title it wasn't overtly violent. I also appreciated the healthy dose of humour peppered throughout and by the end you're left with a feeling of glad tidings and goodwill to all. :-) This movie is definitely going on my list of Christmas shows I have to watch each year. Who knew Santa could be such a badass. :-)
Repeat (2021)
An interesting twist
I found this movie had a really interesting take on the theme of alternate realities and is one of the few movies in this genre where I was left saying "Wow, I didn't see that coming" which was a pleasant surprise. The story also did a good job of keeping the alternate timelines together and cohesive. I really enjoyed it. One note: This is the type of movie you can't leave to go get a snack, etc otherwise you will be lost. Get everything you need ahead of time and pay attention to the details.
NCIS: Naval Criminal Investigative Service: Better Angels (2013)
This one made me cry
I don't too often comment on individual episodes but I just saw this episode for the first time (I only recently started watching this series of NCIS). If I had know the last few minutes would bring me to tears I wish have kept a box of tissues nearby. Reading the trivia section it looks like there was an actual incident like this that happened in WWII. Those are the stories that warm the heart.
Christmas Down Under (2021)
I'm being generous giving this two stars
Wow, there aren't even the words to describe how bad this movie is. Don't waste your time. A bad script and even worse acting are just the beginning of this film's troubles. What a way to ruin the holiday spirit. The money it took to make it should have been donated to charity instead.
Breach (2020)
Wow... So bad. Very very bad!!
The story on its own isn't bad and had this movie been done properly it could have been a decent flick. Unfortunately it wasn't done properly. The acting was horrendous, the production was horrendous, the special effects, if you can call them that, were horrendous and the alien... you guessed it... was horrendous!!!! There was not one redeeming moment in the entire movie. All I can say is that Bruce Willis' standards have hit rock bottom. I used to enjoy his movies but now I have my doubts. Very disappointing.
An American Christmas Carol (1979)
A great retelling of this classic story
Just as others have written, Henry Winkler is fabulous playing the miserly lead character that we all know and love. This version honours the original while putting its own spin on the story. This is a great retelling of the original "A Christmas Carol" and I rank it second (along with Bill Murray's Scrooged) to Alastair Sim's version which is #1 of course.
My only disappointment is that it doesn't get shown anymore. I remember seeing this every year for the first few years after it first aired but I haven't seen it in decades (on network tv) and I don't know why. This version deserves to be dusted off and brought back into the line-up of shows that are featured every year!
This is definitely a "must see" if you come across it.
